Broun (or Brown ) is the name of a Scottish clan in East Lothian , Scotland .

history

Origin of name

The name Broun or Brown occurs in both the Scottish and English languages . Already mentioned in old English scripts (as Brun ), the name is derived from the adjective of the color brown or dark red. It also appears in Old High German , namely as Brunn ; From this name in turn the French surname le Brun developed . Shortly after the Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror, a family of this name was feudal lords in the northern English province of Cumberland .

Broun is also considered as an Anglicization of Mac a 'Bhriuthainn , which means something like "son of Brehon " (judge); This term has already been translated into English as MacBrayne, or it is a direct translation of MacIlledhuinn .

Chief

Chief of the Name and Arms of Broun has been Sir Wayne Broun, 14th Baronet, of Colstoun since 2007 .
