history

It was the Cairns family , descended from the lower landed gentry , who built the Tower House towards the end of the 15th century. In 1568 the defense tower became the property of the Broun clan , also Brown . At this time they expanded the once elongated to an L-shaped floor plan. Gilbert Brown , the last Catholic abbot of Sweetheart Abbey, was one of the owners . When the last family member emigrated to India in 1748, Alistair bought Johnston Carsluith Castle. The defense tower has been state-owned since 1913. Today it is only preserved as a ruin.

description

inside view

Carsluith Castle is isolated between Wigtown Bay and the A75 a few hundred meters southeast of Carsluith. The three-storey building with an L-shaped floor plan has been largely preserved with the exception of the roof and the intermediate floors. The masonry consists of roughly hewn quarry stone, with building openings being lined with reddish sandstone . Above the portal in the inner corner of the building is a coat of arms plate with the coat of arms of the Brouns and the year of construction 156 *. At the edges of the building there are various remains of corner curls . Grotesque motifs are engraved in the gable-end chimneys. The formerly seated house has not been preserved.

The ground-level stone vault is divided into two rooms, which are unusually illuminated by two windows. A spiral staircase leads to the upper floors. The large hall and kitchen are on the first floor. This unusual arrangement is a further indication of an extension in the 16th century. On the basis of remains, a wooden partition wall and two open chimneys on the second floor can be detected.
