Peter Payer (born August 20, 1964 in Vienna ) is an Austrian director and screenwriter .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1982, he began studying medicine and also worked as a ski instructor, from 1987 he had traineeships in cinema and television and from 1990 he created his first documentaries as a director - for example contemporary witnesses - and began working as an advertising director. In the period from 1990 to 1999 he shot around 100 commercials and numerous television films, for example for ORF art pieces .

Payer began his career as a cinema director with the film Investigation on Girls (1999), an adaptation of Albert Drach's book. Ravioli (2003), which took up elements from Alfred Dorfer's play heim.at , and the children's film Villa Henriette (2004) based on the book of the same name by Christine Nöstlinger made Payer known to a broader cinema audience. Acquitted is also a literary film adaptation and is based on Ödön von Horváth's play The Youngest Day . The film had its world premiere in Locarno in 2007 in the competition and was awarded.
In 2011 the thriller At the End of the Day followed, which was awarded the Prix du Public in Liege (Belgium). The actor Nicholas Ofczarek was nominated for the Austrian Film Prize in the category of best actor.
