occupation

Investigation on girls is an Austrian feature film from 1999. It was based on the novel of the same name by Albert Drach .

The film reached 8,800 cinema admissions in Austria.

action

The two young hitchhikers Esmeralda (Elke Winkens) and Stella (Anna Thalbach) are raped during a rainy night in a forest by the driver of the car, Trummer, who took them with him. Then the driver of the car disappears without a trace. Although no body can be found and other serious suspicions arise - gambling debts and high life insurance - a murder trial is initiated. Esmeralda and Stella are immediately suspected of murder and are taken into custody. Allegedly they would have killed Trummer with a jack. As a result, the film plot focuses on the resulting preliminary judicial inquiries into the strenuous murder trial. Public prosecutor Baldur Meixner (Otto Sander), who becomes obsessively lost in the investigation, is convinced that women cannot commit a “perfect murder”. His opponent, the former seaman Harald Poppinger (Max Tidof) is convinced of the innocence of the "girls". In the end, however, the two are sentenced in a purely circumstantial trial. In her closing remarks in court, Stella says: "The world belongs to men, women are just there."

Flashbacks shed light on the previous lives of the two suspects and highlight the moral standards that prevail in small towns and villages with Catholicism, especially with regard to female sexuality.

effect

The film achieves its special atmosphere through the sparse music ( "Stellas Lied" ) by Werner Pirchner, which is used in many places, on the one hand, but also through the original passages from Albert Drachs' novel overlaid with an off-voice ( Harry Rowohlt ) on the other . The novel is written in the descriptive language of police and court minutes throughout.

“Investigation on Girls” premiered at the Diagonale 99 film festival in Graz. For Elke Winkens it was the first foray into the so-called character subject after appearances in the field of television cabaret (sick sisters) . From today's perspective, the smaller supporting roles of Simon Schwarz and Nicholas Ofczarek , both of whom were still at the beginning of their careers, are remarkable .

Availability

Investigation on girls was already broadcast in 2001 as part of the ORF series of art-pieces ; in contrast to other Austrian films in recent years, this strip has not yet been released on DVD .
