from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

art-pieces was the name of an ORF cultural program broadcast weekly between 1981 and 2002 . She stood as supporters, initiator and principal over 21 years, a forum for unconventional film - and television projects in Austria . Represents Despite strong resistance from the Austrian cultural scene decided the ORF 2002 after for years operated deposition of arts and cultural programs and the removal of art pieces .

history

The program was first broadcast in 1981 under the direction of Wolfgang Lorenz .

The experimental and provocative films by Valie Export also caused a sensation in the 1980s .

From 1997 onwards, the ORF's cultural program was recognized as being less important for art pieces as well. The time slot was moved back 45 minutes to 11:15 p.m. From the year before last, 2001, they were broadcast from 11:30 p.m.

Deposition

On June 19, 2002 the board of trustees of the ORF approved a program change which resulted in the cancellation of the art pieces. As a follow-up to the show, 25 - Das Magazin was presented, which the Austrian Cultural Council viewed as an affront to all ORF viewers interested in art. Strong criticism from the Austrian cultural scene, petitions , open letters and complaints to the Federal Communications Senate remained ineffective. On September 26, 2002 , the last episode of kunst-pieces was broadcast under the moderation of Andrea Schurian , who then left the ORF. After the cancellation, Treffpunkt Kultur remained the only art and culture program firmly anchored in the program on ORF.

Reactions

The cancellation of the program, despite previous calls from well-known artists to keep it, caused a lot of excitement in the cultural scene. Interest groups turned indignantly in open letters to the ORF Board of Trustees, Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and State Secretary for Art Franz Morak . A petition with 15,000 signatures for the receipt of the broadcast was handed over to ORF General Director Monika Lindner in early summer 2002 .

In a unanimously adopted resolution, the editors of the ORF main department for culture accused the ORF Board of Trustees and the ORF General Directorate Monika Lindner of “lying in quotas, lying in charges, lying in broadcasting slots and lying in Austria”.

Filmmakers and theorists drew up a concept for restarting the program, which was not taken into account by the ORF program managers.

Complaint to the Federal Communications Senate

A first complaint to the Federal Communications Senate, which asked the ORF to keep the program, as this would otherwise violate its program mandate, was submitted on June 23rd - and rejected on December 2nd. On July 31, the Austrian Cultural Council filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Senate with a list of signatures and on behalf of a number of other organizations such as the Union of Art, Media, Sport and Independent Professions , the Association of Austrian Galleries of Modern Art, the Umbrella Association of Austrian Filmmakers and a number of other associations in front. The approximately 900 supporters, referring to the ORF law passed in 2001, considered the cancellation of the pieces of art to be illegal, as the ORF was thereby violating its program mandate. It was also referred to the fact that a number of cultural programs such as book magazine , gallery round view , and speaking of film have already disappeared from the ORF program and after the cancellation of art pieces only "whole 2 of 336 weekly broadcast hours for constant cultural programs " remained.

The broadcast

content

The broadcast, lasting several hours and not infrequently ending around two or three o'clock at night, had no fixed division. Broadcasts and topic blocks of various kinds were strung together and moderated. The spectrum ranged from “high” culture to pop. The “image” of the pieces of art had a lasting impact in the heyday of 1985–1990 on the distinctive moderation of Dieter Moors , who was replaced in 1991 by the less prominent Mercedes Echerer .

Essential elements of the program were portraits of artists, presentations of feature films, short films, experimental films, concert films, silent films and documentaries, films in the original language with subtitles and contributions on cultural events. Films by Peter Greenaway , Krzysztof Kieślowski , John Waters , Tod Browning , Fernando Arrabal , Andy Warhol , Louis Feuillade , Jean-Luc Godard , Ken Russell , Marcel Ophüls and Mara Mattuschka , as well as classics of German Expressionism (such as Das Kabinett of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu, a symphony of horror ).

The program was loosened up by satirical and cabaret focuses. In the 1980s, for example, ORF was the first German-speaking broadcaster to broadcast the British satirical series Spitting Image as part of the art pieces ; In the early 1990s, the classic comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus followed, also in German subtitled first broadcast . Later on, the cabaret artists Stermann & Grissemann became an integral part of the kunst-pieces for several years with Suite 16 . After several years of interruption, they were once again a fixed point of the show with Kultur.kiste . The cabaret team Projekt X, with its bizarre panel discussions of fictional and prominent personalities, all of which they interpreted themselves, also celebrated their first successes in art pieces.

Cultural significance

In the complaint of the Austrian Cultural Council, which was joined by numerous interest groups and other industry and cultural representatives, to the Federal Communications Senate against the dismissal, the program was described as "the only ORF program slot that is by definition open to innovative, artistic forms of television that go beyond content and formal conventions and which enables the production and broadcasting of aesthetically risky projects on ORF ” , and the conclusion: The kunst-pieces are not only one of the most internationally known brands of the ORF, they have accompanied and promoted Austrian filmmaking and some of its most successful protagonists since their foundation . As a forum for advanced short, experimental and animated films as well as for documentary films, as initiator, supporter and client for unconventional film and television projects, the art pieces are of central importance in the Austrian film landscape.

Signation

The "classic" signature of the show, which was used until Dieter Moors left, was used by the hookline from the 1974 instrumental piece Nautilus by Bob James .
