Veronika Franz

Veronika Franz (* 1965 in Vienna ) is an Austrian screenwriter and film director .

Life

Veronika Franz studied German and philosophy and worked as a film critic for the daily newspaper Kurier . As a longstanding artistic collaborator, she has been accompanying director and producer Ulrich Seidl since 1997 . She wrote with him and a. the scripts for Hundstage (2001), Import Export (2007), and the Paradise Trilogy (2012/2013). In 2003 Franz founded Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion GmbH together with Seidl.

She made her directorial debut in 2012 together with Severin Fiala , Ulrich Seidl's nephew, with a documentary about Peter Kern . In the film Ich seh Ich seh the two directed a feature film together for the first time, for which they also wrote the script. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and subsequently won multiple awards, including the “Melies d'or” for the best European genre film of 2015. Ich seh Ich seh was also broadcast as an Austrian contribution to the Oscar abroad . At the Austrian Film Prize 2016 she was awarded together with Fiala in the categories Best Director and Best Feature Film. A US remake of the film is in the making, produced by the Animal Kingdom production company ( It Follows , It Comes at Night ). The Lodge (with Riley Keogh, among others), the directing duo's first English-language feature film, was produced by Hammerfilm and Film Nation ( The Arrival ). It celebrated its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2019 . Franz and Fiala are currently working in Austria again: on the historical film Des Teufels Bad .

In June 2019, Franz was elected to the board of the Austrian Film Directorate Association . In 2020 she was appointed to the jury of the 77th Venice International Film Festival .
