The award ceremony was held for the first time in the ballroom of the Vienna City Hall in 2013 at the invitation of Mayor Michael Häupl and City Councilor for Culture Andreas Mailath-Pokorny . Around 900 guests from film, culture, business, politics and the media were expected.

The winners received trophies designed by Valie Export in the form of an ascending step-shaped spiral from Ursula Strauss and Thomas Schubert , the previous year's winners in the categories of best female actress and best male actor . The event was again moderated by Rupert Henning . The scenography was designed by the production designer Alexandra Maringer , the lighting design was done by the cameramen Gerald Kerkletz and Thomas Benesch in cooperation with dangl.tv . Federal President Heinz Fischer took on the patronage of the event .

The media partner was once again the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation , especially with the special interest broadcaster ORF III , which around 23 January focused on reports on Austrian filmmakers and Austrian films (see also New Austrian Film ) and Austrian films ( breathing by Karl Markovics , Whores' Glory by Michael Glawogger and Lourdes by Jessica Hausner ). In the run-up to the award ceremony, the actor and director Karl Markovics, the President of the Film Academy, presented one of the 14 award categories every day for two weeks in the program Kultur Today on ORF III. On the evening of the award ceremony, the nominees and organizers of the Austrian Film Prize were presented in a special edition of Kultur Heute and broadcast live to the town hall several times. The day after, a “Long Night of Austrian Films” will be shown for the first time on ORF.

The submission deadline was September 14, 2012. In 2013, the new category Best Short Film was added to the 13 categories so far .

Three nominees were chosen in each of the 14 categories. In order for a film to be nominated, at least two of these criteria had to be met

  • the original version of the film is in German
  • the director comes from Austria or lives in Austria
  • the producer is Austrian or lives in Austria

The nominations were announced on December 17, 2012. Was not nominated Michael Haneke's film Love , who came in the competition year in theaters and has received numerous awards, including the Golden Palm of the International Film Festival of Cannes 2012 , the European Film Award in 2012 , the Golden Globe Award in 2013 and as the Austrian contribution for the foreign Oscar was nominated. Haneke did not submit the film because he would have found it "somehow stupid" and unfair to present himself to "the people who are just starting out as competition".
