Margarethe Tiesel (born February 22, 1959 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actress .

Life

Margarethe Tiesel completed an acting degree from 1981 to 1983 at the University of Music and Performing Arts “Mozarteum” in Salzburg . After completing her training, she went to Germany as a theater actress. There Tiesel was a member of the ensemble at the Dortmund City Theater from 1983 to 1985 . This was followed by engagements at the Württembergische Landesbühne Esslingen (1985–1989) and at the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg (1989–1993). She also worked u. a. in theater productions at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus , Staatstheater Stuttgart , Schauspiel Frankfurt , Ernst Deutsch Theater and Kampnagel in Hamburg . In Austria Tiesel u. a. at the Salzburg Festival , in Vienna at the Remise , at the Schauspielhaus , Theater Drachengasse and Theater in der Josefstadt .

Since 1994 Tiesel has appeared repeatedly as a guest at the Schauspielhaus Graz . Since February 4, 2017 she can be seen there in the play The Miracle Exercise by Daniel Glattauer at the side of Johannes Silberschneider and Franz Solar .

Parallel to her work in the theater, Tiesel was engaged for a first feature film in 1983/84, Cornelia Schlingmann's experimental film Hur und Heilig . At the same time, she made her television debut in Dietrich Haugk's BR production The Golden Shoes (1984). Since the early 1990s, Tiesel has held small and supporting roles in over 30 film and television productions, including Barbara Albert's feature film Nordrand (1999) and the recurring role of Frau Blauensteiner in the series Trautmann (2000–2008).

Tiesel became known to an international audience through her first leading role in the cinema in Ulrich Seidl's Paradies: Liebe (2012). In the film, which premiered in competition at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival , she can be seen as a lonely 50-year-old Viennese sex tourist looking for love in much younger black men in Kenya . The actress, who improvised while filming with African amateur actors, received great praise from the specialist critics and was considered a co-favorite for the actor's award, which was awarded to the two Romanians Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan ( Beyond the Hills ). In the same year Tiesel was nominated for the European Film Award as the first Austrian actress . When the Austrian Film Prize was awarded in 2013 , she was named Best Actress .

In 2019 Tiesel was seen at the side of Jonas Dassler in Fatih Akin's literary film adaptation The Golden Glove . The supporting role of the homeless alcoholic Gerda earned her a nomination for the German Film Prize .

Margarethe Tiesel is married to the actor Franz Solar and lives in Graz.
