Wanted is an Austrian film from 1999 . It was shot by Harald SICHERITZ . It is not a comedy in the strict sense of the word, as the cynical and sometimes philosophical exchanges should also stimulate thought. With 183,000 viewers, Wanted was the most successful Austrian film of 1999.

action

The film is about the trauma surgeon Thomas Reiter, who, after the death of a young patient he feels guilty about, takes refuge in a fantasy world in which anything is possible. In his ideas he is a cowboy in the Wild West, where there are still clear boundaries between good and bad and life is not complex. There he rides as an outlaw through the prairie, saves women from their brutal husbands, robs banks and has a good time.

His parents are worried about him and about his career. Therefore, they kidnap Thomas' former childhood friend Hermann to ask for help. This pastor, now a pastor, though not really happy with his situation, has never forgiven Thomas for accidentally beating him once during his school days. However, since the resolute parents do not accept a rejection, he visits the doctor, who has voluntarily admitted to a closed institution in order to escape from reality. He's not the only one with problems there. In addition to the normal inmates, whose illnesses range from manic-depressive to autism to identity suppression, the psychologist shows massive signs of memory suppression and pronounced compulsiveness. Thomas explains to Hermann why he feels freer and livelier in the fantasy world. He does not understand his "delusions" because as a doctor he should have a rationality and should know that accidents can happen.

Thomas is released from the institution against his will by the sadistic head of the clinic, who does not hide his affair with a young woman and runs wildly through the corridors. However, he still cannot cope with the complexity of everyday life and returns to the institution a short time later. After Hermann and Thomas went on several excursions together in the Wild West, the pastor, who was also overwhelmed by his everyday life in the church (between sexual abstinence and annoying confirmation groups), became increasingly overwhelmed by the charm of the imagination. On Confirmation Day, it was for his sake to live, he stoically walks into his room in the rectory and commits suicide.

Thomas finds out about it and leaves the institution. A nurse accompanies him to the gate. When he looks around, he sees Thomas and Hermann's apparently lifeless body riding away on two horses. He sends the pursuers who appear out of nowhere in the wrong direction, stops smiling and closes his eyes. In the imagination of Thomas Hermann wakes up and rides with him into the sunset.

Locations

The shooting took place in the summer of 1999. Backgrounds at the Hohe Wand, at the Grossmittel military training area and in the Roman quarry in St. Margarethen served as the backdrop for the Wild West . Filming was also necessary in the Don Bosco parish, in the Hanusch Hospital and in Hetzendorf Castle .

Statements

Wanted is a comedy to me , but I can also laugh at things that others don't find funny at all. Let's put it this way: If India was a comedy, Wanted is one too. "
