Over the hills is a Romanian-French-Belgian film drama by Cristian Mungiu from the year 2012 . The story is based on a true story .

action

Alina and Voichița are close friends and grew up together in the orphanage . At the age of 19, Alina was taken into a foster family and later emigrated to Germany . Voichița stays in Romania and enters a small, isolated monastery as a nun . Alina visits her friend and tries to convince her to come to Germany too, but she wants to stay in the monastery in Romania. Alina clashes with the priest and the other nuns and is soon suspected of being possessed . She dies of the consequences of an exorcism .

Background information

Mungiu was inspired for his screenplay by two non-fiction books by the Romanian BBC journalist Tatiana Niculescu Bran , who documented a fatal exorcism of a 23-year-old in Tanacu ( Vaslui district ) in 2005.
