Since the 1980s, Hader has been one of the best-known and most popular cabaret artists in the country, who was also responsible for some of the most successful Austrian film productions as the leading actor and screenwriter. In 2017 he made his debut as a film director with Wilde Maus .

life and career

Early years and beginnings of the career

Josef Hader was born in 1962 in Waldhausen im Strudengau in the Lower Mühlviertel . He grew up on his parents' farm in Nöchling in the Waldviertel and attended the Stiftsgymnasium Melk . Despite, or perhaps because of, this past, he describes his relationship to religion and church as a “love-hate relationship”. Although Hader said he always had a certain sympathy for the Catholic Church because he met the first “ leftists ” there, he described the exit as a necessary step, “because the church's missteps are happening so consistently at the moment that they are constantly insecure nineteenth century ". During his boarding school days he was a member of the school theater and from 1980 began performing as a cabaret artist in front of classmates.

After graduating from high school, Hader did his community service at the Red Cross and began studying to become a teacher ( German and history ). In 1982 he wrote his first cabaret program Fort Geschritten , which he performed mainly in Lower Austrian restaurants and pedestrian zones in Vienna. When Hader was awarded the coveted Salzburg Bull in 1985 for his second stage program Der Witzableiter und das Feuer - with his former classmate Otto Lechner at the piano - he finally broke off his studies in favor of cabaret. This was followed by the programs In the Mild West (1986) and Exchange Jokes for Money (1987). A year later, Hader received the Austrian Cabaret Prize .

The breakthrough came in 1988 with Biagn or Brechen . For the first time, Hader moved away from the then common political number cabaret and moved towards the form of a one-act cabaret . In 1990 he received the German Cabaret Prize for Bunter Abend (1990). With the programs Im Keller (1993) and Privat (1994) he developed cabaret into a kind of narrative or monologue . During the monologue, the artist's attention is increased because he apparently no longer appears as an actor towards the audience. He takes on the function of a neutral narrator, which means that no interlocutor can be identified and the audience automatically feels addressed. He sits there and talks about his life, starting with the birth. In his program in the basement , he had conversations with a craftsman who was supposedly in the auditorium. This created a fictional dialogue, characterized by questions and repetitions. His program Privat became the most successful cabaret program in Austria with around 500,000 viewers.

In his program Hader muss weg (2004) the artist blurred the lines between cabaret and drama. Hader slipped into a total of seven roles on stage - all of them tragic characters, three of which are dead in the end. In the beige trench coat , Hader embodied the most diverse types exclusively through variation of facial expressions, gestures and language.

Since 1997, Hader has been on tour with his best-of program Hader plays Hader , which was redesigned in 2011. In 2011 he was awarded the Bavarian Cabaret Prize and the Göttingen Elch .

In Germany , Hader was able to gain a better foothold as a cabaret artist than his Austrian colleagues; he is generally considered Austria's most successful cabaret artist.

In 1991 he and his colleague and friend Alfred Dorfer wrote the tragic-comic play India , which was a great success. It tells the story of the two gastronomy inspectors Kurt Fellner and Heinzi Bösel, who become friends on a business trip through the province despite their different characters. The two artists received the Austrian Cabaret Prize for their work . The film adaptation that followed two years later, directed by Paul Harather , surpassed the success of the play by far - India (awarded the Max Ophüls Prize and the Austrian Film Prize, among others ) became one of the most successful and well-known Austrian films Achieved cult status and helped the two main actors to become even better known. Hader has continued his film work to this day.

Movie

Because of his popularity as a cabaret artist, Hader quickly became a sought-after actor. However, he has always only appeared in relatively few films, "because I don't get that many offers that interest me". So he mainly concentrates on a few projects "where I can also work on the script or where the role really kicks me in".

Hader achieved fame as an actor, among other things, through the role of Simon Brenner in the film adaptations of the Brenner crime novels by Wolf Haas , directed by Wolfgang Murnberger . Hader also worked as a screenwriter together with Haas and Murnberger in the previously released Brenner films Come, Sweet Death (2000), Silentium (2004), The Bone Man (2009) and The Eternal Life (2015). Both commercial success and critical acclaim accompanied all four films that have appeared to date. In contrast to earlier films with well-known cabaret artists from Austria (such as Hinterholz 8 , Mother's Day ), the Brenner films were also successful in cinemas in other European countries, especially in France and Germany.

Hader also repeatedly worked at the side of director David Schalko , with whom he realized the joint project Aufschneider in 2010 . In the two-part TV series produced by Superfilm for ORF and arte , Hader played the lovable, cynical-misanthropic pathologist Dr. Hermann Fuhrmann . In addition, Hader wrote the script together with Schalko. He also acted as an actor in Schalko's films Heaven (2006) and How to Live (2011).

When Come, Sweet Death was awarded the Romy TV Prize for the best screenplay of a film as the most visited Austrian cinema film of 2000 and The Bone Man in 2010 , Hader refused to accept the award, remarking that he did not accept any popularity awards.

For his acting performance in the film Half a Life by Nikolaus Leytner , Hader was awarded the German Television Prize for Best Actor in 2009 and the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2010 together with Nikolaus Leytner and Franziska Walser . In 2010, he also received a nomination for the Golden Camera in the category of best German actor .

In autumn 2015 he made the film Wilde Maus , with which he made his debut as a director.

For his role as Stefan Zweig in the film Before the Dawn (2016) he was nominated for the European Film Award 2017 and the Austrian Film Award 2017 as best actor.

Private

Hader, who in general consistently shields his private life from the public, is the partner of the actress Pia Hierzegger , with whom he stood in front of the camera in The Bone Man , Aufschneider , the ORF city comedy The White Lie and for Wilde Maus . He has two sons and lives in Vienna .
