Houchang Allahyari ( listen ? / I ; PersianAudio file / audio sample هوشنگ الهیاری; * 1941 in Tehran ) is an Austrian psychiatrist and filmmaker of Iranian origin.

Life

Houchang Allahyari was born in Iran and immigrated to Austria as a teenager . In Vienna , where he still lives today, he studied medicine and worked for a long time as a psychiatrist in penal institutions, where he also used films in therapy.

From 1970 he made numerous short films, later also several feature films, of which I love Vienna (1991), Heights (1994) and Born in Absurdistan (1999) in particular found a larger audience. In his films, Allahyari repeatedly addresses the fate of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, which is often dramatic, but also happens with humor.

In October 2009 he presented the documentary Bock for President about the work of Ute Bock , who works in refugee aid , which he created together with his son Tom-Dariusch Allahyari . This earned both of them the Austrian Film Prize, which was awarded for the first time . In 2014, Allahyari received the Great Diagonale Film Award as the best Austrian feature film for The Last Dance .
