Bock for President is an Austrian documentary by the Austrian- Iranian directors Houchang Allahyari and Tom-Dariusch Allahyari . The film portrays Ute Bock , an Austrian educator known for her commitment to refugees. Not only their work, but also the current situation of asylum seekers and refugees in Austria are discussed.

The premiere originally planned for the beginning of November as part of the Viennale film festival was brought forward at short notice and took place, as festival director Hans Hurch explained, as a “small contribution of our festival in solidarity with the concerns and protests of the self-organized student body” , during the student protests in Austria 2009/2010 as a preview on October 31, 2009 in the occupied Audimax of the University of Vienna . The official premiere was on November 1st in the Stadtkino . The cinema release in Austria took place on January 15, 2010, with the film being shown mainly in art house cinemas throughout Austria.

action

The center of the documentary “Bock for President” is the restaurant of the “Refugee Project Ute Bock” association in the second Viennese district of Leopoldstadt , in the middle of the Carmelite district . People in need come to the club's premises to pick up groceries, others line up for free legal advice, look for a roof over their heads or use the postal service that the club offers for the homeless. Ute Bock runs the association she founded and is accompanied by the camera during the film. At the same time, it gives an insight into the life stories of the people she looks after.

reception

  • “Fascinating film portrait of a woman who still loves people, even though she knows them far too well.” Film magazine SKIP
  • "This portrait shows a woman who does not confuse her political stance with ideologization, humanity with ingratiation and personal commitment with self-styling." VIENNALE Pocketguide

Statement from the directors

We followed Ute Bock with the camera for a period of two years. We recorded her in typical work situations, in her rare “private” everyday life, or, for example, together with her sister. The rough but deeply human nature of this woman makes for comedy at times, even amid the human tragedies. In addition to Ute Bock, her clients and employees also play an important role in the film. Especially at a time when humanity and solidarity are being questioned massively, Ute Bock offers an example of how much the commitment of a single person can achieve. The audience shouldn't leave the cinema depressed, but inspired!

Awards

At the first awarding of the Austrian Film Prize in January 2011, Bock for President was named Best Documentary .
