Technology benchmarking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In technology benchmarking , the individual attributes of technologies are measured against the " benchmark ".

The benchmark can be a similar or a completely different technology, provided that the target for the use of technology is identical, but also a technological solution principle, a patent on a process or the specification of a potential customer. For example, an injection molding process can be compared with another injection molding process. He might then have different parameters, but the same goal, namely to manufacture a part with the specified tolerances. Or fundamentally different technologies are compared, such as "vapor deposition on plastic surfaces and subsequent protective coating" versus "direct coating in the plastic tool with high-gloss special paint".

Aspects that are usually considered are:

  • Target of the technology or the process
  • functionality
  • ability
  • stability
  • material
  • Empirical values
  • Cost or
  • Capacities.

The analysis of technologies can also be part of a product benchmarking .

Alternatively, the term technology benchmarking in the Anglo-Saxon area is also used for methods with which the technological equipment and efficiency (e.g. IT equipment and security) of companies are measured against the best practice standard (also technology evaluation ).
