The Theater am Alsergrund is a cabaret and performance space in the 9th Viennese district of Alsergrund , which was founded by Andreas Hutter (1961-2010) and the first time its operation resumed in one of Hutter converted on their own coal cellar on 7 October 1995th The theater is run as an association and seats 68 people.

The Theater am Alsergrund has established itself primarily as a launch pad for young cabaret artists and young actors who want to present their program to the audience and the media under professional conditions. Austrian cabaret artists such as Werner Brix , Mike Supancic , Pepi Hopf , Thomas Stipsits and Klaus Eckel started their careers in this theater. During the playing season, the Open House - Play & Win event for young cabaret artists takes place every other month , in which the audience selects a daily winner from up to eight participants.

Like many small theaters in Vienna, the Theater am Alsergrund is heavily dependent on subsidies. In 2009, for example, the funding from the City of Vienna was not transferred in time and the theater was in financial distress. Established artists such as Josef Hader , Erwin Steinhauer , Michael Niavarani and Viktor Gernot supported the stage with charity events. In recent years, however, the theater has consolidated and, in addition to normal theater operations, is regularly booked for pre-premieres, premieres and concerts , including by established artists.

Since 1996 the Theater am Alsergrund has organized the cabaret and cabaret competition Goldener Kleinkunstnagel , which was also founded by Andreas Hutter.

Since it was founded, the management of the theater has been in the hands of Andreas Hutter (from 2003 together with his wife Cornelia). After the death of Andreas Hutter, the cabaret duo Buchgraber & Brandl (Martin Buchgraber and Joachim Brandl ) took over the management of the theater since 2011 and Cornelia Hutter (married to Michael Auernigg since 2014). Cornelia Auernigg will continue to run the theater in the spirit of Andreas Hutter and will retain the concept of promoting newcomers in the theater and in the course of the Goldener Kleinkunstnagel competition .
