action

In their second joint case, the detective Grete Öller from the Linz State Criminal Police Office and her colleague Lisa Nemeth are called to the Steyr breakthrough reservoir , where a dead person was found. The corpse has a gunshot wound and, according to local doctor Dr. Ramsauer has been in the lake for at least two weeks. Since the deceased, Erich Dirnbacher, had suffered from depression since his wife had left him with the children, and he had also suffered from advanced pancreatic cancer, it can initially be assumed that he had committed suicide.

However arises in the course of the investigation found that Dirnbacher was the person who killed years ago Ahorners wife Eva and his daughter Lilly in a car accident and then run driver had committed. Ahorner had searched for the culprit for a long time until he was sent on early retirement because of depression and incapacity for work. When Grete Öller brings this news to Sepp Ahorner and wants to ask him about it, it turns out that he has disappeared without a trace for two weeks. Sepp's mother Maria is also worried, especially since he took an old hunting rifle from his father with him.

From Rosi, Geli Pfoser's little daughter, Öller receives a hint that Sepp could be in a hut on the Gaisberg, where Nemeth and Öller actually meet him. Dirnbacher had visited Ahorner before his death and confessed to him what he had done. The forensic medical examination shows that the fatal shot was fired from about two meters away, so there is no suicide. The projectile came from an old hunting rifle. Ahorner tells Öller that after Dirnbacher's confession he wanted to kill himself with a hunting rifle, but was ultimately too cowardly to pull the trigger.

The ballistic examination of Ahorner's hunting rifle shows that this was the murder weapon. Only Ahorner's fingerprints can be found on the rifle, but the rifle was kept unlocked in his apartment and was therefore accessible to everyone. When Öller tries to arrest Ahorner in his hut, he flees from her into the forest. For Nemeth, this is a clear admission of guilt. Ahorner runs home to his mother. She confesses that she shot Dirnbacher at the reservoir because she could no longer see her son suffer, and is arrested by the police.
