Winner of the Austrian Film Award 2020

The presentation of the Austrian Film Awards 2020 by the Academy of Austrian Films took place on January 30, 2020 in the auditorium of Grafenegg Castle in Lower Austria . The nominations were announced on December 4, 2019. Most of them, in a total of ten categories, were given to Little Joe by Jessica Hausner , followed by Der Boden unter dem Füssen by Marie Kreutzer with seven and Joy and Nevrland with six nominations each. The award ceremony was moderated by Salka Weber and Markus Schleinzer , directed by Mirjam Unger .

In 2020, a prize was awarded for the first time for the film with the greatest audience, which went to Love Machine with over 141,000 tickets purchased . The honorary award for services to the academy was also awarded for the first time; the award winner was Josef Aichholzer . With a total of four awards in the categories Best Film , Best Director , Best Screenplay and Best Female Actress , the film received Joy of Sudabeh Mortezai the most awards. The prize for the best documentary went ex aequo to Erde by Nikolaus Geyrhalter and Inland by Ulli Gladik. Nevrland and Little Joe each received three prizes .

Films submitted

The criteria for participation for the feature films and documentaries were a theatrical release between October 2018 and November 2019 and evidence of significant Austrian cultural imprint. Short films qualified on the basis of awards and festival successes in the past year. The full members of the Academy of Austrian Films select the nominations for films and individual performances in 16 prize categories from the submissions . A total of 38 Austrian feature films, including 16 feature films and 22 documentaries, as well as 18 short films were submitted.
