action
In this homeland film with brass music and home movie horror, among others, the undead, a depressed forester and a Syrian family of poets haunt Styria .
For example, the widow of a National Socialist is setting up a CINEMA 666 in an old factory , where people can mourn the past. A forester is being followed by his dead sons who committed suicide years ago. A secretary is confronted with a vicious doppelganger and drives her supermother crazy.
Production and Background
The project by the directors Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska and their Nature Theater of Oklahoma from New York , named after the amateur theater group from Franz Kafka's novel fragment Der Verschollene ( America ), was realized by Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion in cooperation with the Styrian Autumn 2017 art festival . Around 80 amateur actors were cast on site for the film , as well as brass bands and fire brigades.
Copper and Liska did not read the novel themselves. In preparation, they had readers tell them about the content and learned it by reading Wikipedia.
The shooting on Super 8 took place in September and October 2017 in Styria . The shooting locations were original locations in Upper Styria in and around Neuberg an der Mürz . The production was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the State of Styria and Cine Art , and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation was involved . Matz Müller was responsible for the sound.
At the Diagonale 2018 film festival in Graz , the making-of Die Untoten von Neuberg by Ulrich A. Reiterer and a video interview with Elfriede Jelinek as well as an exhibition with set photos were shown. The project was awarded the special prize as part of the 2018 Nestroy Theater Prize.
The film was released on DVD in 2019 as part of the Edition Österreichischer Film von Hoanzl and the Standard .
reception
Andrey Arnold wrote in the daily newspaper Die Presse that the film - although he enjoyed turning the Austrian self-image through the brutal satirical meat grinder - its district carnival mood robbed a lot of bite. Compared to Schlingensief's The German Chainsaw Massacre , this sympathetic soul carnival lacks urgency. Politically, it remains rather unspecific and would eventually run out of steam.
Thomas Mießgang described the film on ZEIT Online as a “grotesque metaphor for the Nazi past and the right-wing populist present in Austria”. The Styrian zombie carnival would remind a little of the Blair Witch Project .
Writer Clemens J. Setz wrote in his film review on derStandard.at : “I think I've never seen anything so crazy in my life. Something so foolish ”.
