Hüseyin Tabak (born July 15, 1981 in Lemgo ) is a German film director , producer and screenwriter of Kurdish origin.

Life

Hüseyin Tabak comes from an immigrant family from Turkey and grew up in the spa town of Bad Salzuflen in Germany . Although his parents are of Kurdish descent, the main language spoken at home was Turkish . In 1995, Hüseyin and his family acquired dual citizenship .

At the age of 22 he moved to Hamburg to work on film sets . After first internship jobs he was in a row as a production operator, manager and assistant director active and so collected between 2003 to 2006 more than 20 feature films experience. At the same time he made several short films on his own and finally applied to the Vienna Film Academy in 2006 , where he was accepted for the subjects of directing and scriptwriting . His directing professors were Michael Haneke and Peter Patzak .

After studying in Austria , he returned to Germany, where he has since worked as a director, screenwriter and producer of documentaries and feature films .

Hüseyin Tabak lives in Hamburg, is married and has two sons. He is a member of the Academy of Austrian Films .

These included six awards at the Antalya Film Festival (Turkish Film Prize), including best film, best screenplay and best leading actor ( Abdulkadir Tuncer ). At the Austrian Film Awards 2014 , the film won in four categories (Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Music).

In 2012, Tabak's second feature film, based on a screenplay by Milan Dor , was released in cinemas, The Horse on the Balcony . This has also been shown successfully at international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival , the Giffoni Film Festival and the German children's media festival Goldener Spatz , where it won the 2013 awards for best screenplay and best leading actor ( Enzo Gaier ). At the international children's film festival Lucas in Frankfurt am Main he was awarded the audience award and at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival with the award for the best children's film.

In 2017 his documentary The Legend of the Ugly King premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and won the award for best documentary at the Hof International Film Festival that same year .

This was followed in 2019 with the feature film Gipsy Queen Tabak's third feature film, which celebrated its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and won both the ecumenical jury award and the award for best actress ( Alina Șerban ). In addition, Tobias Moretti won the Austrian Film Prize 2020 for the best leading actor, and Alina Șerban was nominated for the German Film Prize in the same year .

In 2020, the Tatort episode Borowski and the Curse of the White Seagull Tobacco was the first directorial work for television . The film will celebrate its TV premiere on May 10, 2020 in the Das Erste program .
