Borowski and the Curse of the White Seagull is a TV film from the crime series Tatort . The contribution produced by NDR is the 1131st Tatort episode and was broadcast for the first time on May 10, 2020 on Erste , ORF 2 and SRF 1 . The Kiel chief inspector Klaus Borowski is investigating in his 35th case, his colleague Mila Sahin in her fourth case.

action

During a rapid training drive, the four police students Nasrin, Tobias, Leroy and Sandro are called to a mission. Jule, a young woman in her early twenties, threatens to kill herself by jumping off a skyscraper roof. The budding police officers can no longer prevent the suicide and have to watch Jule jump. One day later, a workshop led by the two inspectors Klaus Borowski and Mila Sahin takes place at the police school on the subject of the first attack in a homicide . The police students who suffered from the shock they suffered the day before also take part. A dramatic incident then occurs during the practical exercise. Nasrin stabs her colleague Sandro in a blood frenzy, who dies a little later in the arms of Borowski.

Borowski and Sahin are shaken and feel responsible for the escalation, but are charged with the investigation by Police Officer Roland Schladitz. However, Sahin is suspended from teaching at the police school until further notice, which in turn leads to tensions between the two investigators.

The questioning of Nasrin turns out to be extremely difficult, since she apparently no longer has any memory of the crime and seems to be suffering from delusions. The perpetrator's colleagues, above all her friend Tobias and his friend Leroy, are not very cooperative and let Borowski and Sahin run nowhere. In the course of the investigation, the young woman who jumped from the roof comes into focus again. Apparently there was a connection between Jule and Nasrin and the solution to the case lies in their past.

Jules father Luca, a kiosk owner, tells Mila Sahin that Jule and Nasrin were close friends as children. Later, Nasrin didn't want to hear anything from Jule.

An evaluation of the video that was shot during the workshop exercise shows that Nasrin freaked out when Sandro whispered the expression “Fickimicki-Bitch” in her ear. The commissioners suspect that Nasrin may have been raped. When the police students are questioned about this term, Tobias and Leroy react excitedly.

During an on-site visit at Jules apartment, Nasrin testifies that the brothers Enrique and Timo Krüger and Volkan Durmaz raped the then 15-year-old Jule on the roof of the house. Nasrin could not help Jule and was even forced by the three perpetrators to lure her friend onto the roof, a trauma that she has not dealt with to this day. Inspector Sahin notes how much the memories weigh on Nasrin, which explains why the girl was so freaked out at the workshop.

Enrique Krüger and Volkan Durmaz are questioned and deny the allegation of rape. Timo Krüger cannot be found, his cell phone has not been connected to the network for two days. A short time later, Volkan Durmaz also disappears. Because Tobias stole a gun during shooting training, Borowski suspects that Tobias and Leroy have kidnapped Volkan Durmaz in order to avenge their friend and colleague Nasrin.

Tobias wants to extort the confession from Volkan Durmaz in a boathouse that he also raped Nasrin, which he denies until the end. He chased Leroy away with the stolen pistol. When Borowski arrives there, Tobias is already with Durmaz on the skyscraper from which Jule jumped to her death. He shoots Durmaz before the commissioners stop him from suicide and arrest him. Shortly before, Timo's buried body was found after Leroy had confessed that they wanted to "miss a lesson" for Timo, but that Timo suddenly collapsed, which they had not intended.

Reviews

Thomas Gehringer from Tittelbach.tv rated: “ Borowski and the curse of the white seagull is about the consequences of a past crime, about traumatization, loss of control and revenge. The 'Tatort' episode is not a classic detective thriller, but a psychologically coherent, depressing drama. Soma Pysall's play as a young policewoman is outstanding, and the production of Hüseyin Tabak ( Gipsy Queen ) on his television debut based on a script by Grimme Prize winners Eva and Volker A. Zahn is convincing . "

Julian Vetten from n-tv describes the film as a “dark crime thriller of the highest order”, which “confronts the viewer with uncomfortable truths about reality” and draws “razor sharp psychograms of its protagonists”.

In Der Spiegel , Christian Buss criticized: "Director Hüseyin Tabak find many strong images of his first crime scene '. The complicated narrative specifications of the script by the author duo Eva and Volker A. Zahn are not implemented as strongly. Because behind the shock scenes of suicide and colleague murder, the traumatic relationship between two young women should reveal itself in the course of the action. And then the plot wobbles. [...] And at some point the strong images only appear to be symbolic overload. It gets particularly unfortunate with the motif of the seagull from the title, whose flight the camera imitates right at the beginning of the 'crime scene'. Obviously, the desperate heroines want to be free like birds - in connection with jumping from the skyscraper roof, however, it only seems like a cynical instrumentalization of the dream of flying. "

Markus Ehrenberg describes the Kiel crime thriller as a “crime scene a la Nordic Noir” in the Berliner Tagesspiegel . His conclusion: “No antics, no private stuff, sworn police students who are overtaken by the past, meet idiosyncratic commissioners who come closer to each other in the course of the investigation, purely professionally. Around them a spiral of violence, a drama about guilt, vengeance and the most intimate friendship with almost Shakespeare's dimensions (book: Eva Zahn and Volker A. Zahn) - as well as a quiet, feathered visitor in the middle, who gives the bloodbath an almost meditative balance gives."

Marek Bang judged the film for Kino.de and wrote: “Director Hüseyin Tabak puts a lot of pressure on the tube in Borowski and the Curse of the White Seagull , but never loses sight of the different storylines of his thriller and adds them to one of the most successful crime novels current 'Tatort' season together. He and the authors [...] deserve special credit for showing the courage to make uncomfortable decisions. That even the best inspectors cannot prevent every crime is probably the message of this sometimes nasty 'crime scene', in which not everyone is happy in the end with coastal fog and fish sandwiches in each other's arms. "

Rainer Unruh from the television magazine TV Spielfilm praised Soma Pysall's play: "You haven't seen such a strong performance in an episode role at the Tatort for a long time: Soma Pysall plays her soul out as a police student Nasrin."
