action

Main storyline

The men are on strike at the Ostendorf shipyard in Kiel . The works council chairman, Rudolf Bruhns, also incites them, not entirely unselfishly. He would like to strengthen his position as a tough negotiator and impress the men so, which would also have a positive effect on his re-election. Felix Ostendorf, who inherited the shipyard from his father, demands that Bruhns write down 50 names of the men who are to be released by tomorrow. Ostendorf cannot and does not want to accept the demands made by Bruhns. As it turns out, the board secretary Tatjana Matthies got involved with Bruhns the evening before to ensure that her unfit for life brother Benno keeps his job. When Tatjana tells the man that it was a one-off affair, he puts her under pressure and says he'll be expecting her again in the evening because he hasn't handed in the list yet. Shortly thereafter, Bruhns had a dispute with his works council colleague and deputy Manfred Heise, who was of the opinion that Bruhns was waging a private war against the young Ostendorf because he couldn't get along with him.

The next morning Bruhns are found on a work raft. He was slain and then plunged into the depths. One of the oldest shipyard employees, Paschkowiak, found him during his inspection. It quickly turns out that he was killed with a large flashlight and died of a traumatic brain injury . The chief detective, Klaus Borowski, who is responsible for the case, wants to know from Ostendorf who is eligible for release. In principle, anyone who has been employed at the shipyard for less than five years lets Ostendorf know. Since there is a better understanding between Ostendorf and Heise, the strike at the shipyard can in principle be resolved, despite further protests. The crisis between Tatjana Matthies and her friend Holger Clausen is increasing, and not just since he found out that the young woman got involved with Bruhns in order to secure the job for her brother. Tatiana plans to leave the city and go to Australia , where she applied to a marine institute. She worries that she will have to leave her brother Benno behind, who can hardly manage on his own. Benno is not only very attached to his sister, but also to Holger Clausen. When he's around with them, he's happy with his life.

As an alibi for the evening when Bruhns had to die, Heise states that he had been to the Ostendorfs for a work lunch; Clausen claims to have been fishing with Benno. Shortly thereafter, Tatjana calls someone and makes an appointment. Benno notices that his sister is leaving the apartment and notifies Clausen, who actually shows up in the bar, where Tatjana is staying. The young woman makes it clear to Clausen that she considers the relationship to be over and then escapes from the bar, asking the bouncer Mike, with whom she is friends, to stop Clausen so that he cannot follow her. A few hours later, Tatjana's body was pulled out of the water in the harbor. Clausen is arrested.

Borowski feels uncomfortable and speaks to Frieda Jung, reproaching himself for the fact that he might have prevented Tatjana's death. When Benno is told about his sister's death, he crushes a glass in his hand and keeps repeating that Tatjana - unlike him - is an excellent swimmer. Jung worries about the excited young man who first needs a tranquilizer. When Borowski hears Clausen some time later, he suddenly attacks him. He claims that he did not follow Tatiana in a taxi as the doorman suspected. He went to his boat. There was a dispute between them because Tatiana wanted to go to Australia, where she got a job in some marine institute. He agrees to provide fingerprints and a semen sample, as Tatjana had sexual intercourse shortly before her death.

Borowski learns that Ostendorf has a yacht in the millionaires' harbor, traces are taken there that show that Tatjana was on the ship. In a conversation with Ostendorf's wife Isabel, she lets him know that she and her husband have agreed that he must end his relationship with Tatjana Matthies. The fact was, however, that he could not get away from her and, unfortunately, she did not get away from her husband. She is astonished to note that Tatjana has also been murdered. When Ostendorf and Heise are brought in for interrogation, Isabel Ostendorf also appears surprisingly and says that Heise had been there for dinner, but one would have had to wait more than 1½ hours for her husband that evening and he was also on the evening of Tatjana's death went away again. Thereupon Ostendorf admits to having met her on Tatjana's death evening on his yacht, not for the first time. Tatjana quickly needed money for Australia because of the approval of the Australian company. She just didn't want to go and he left the ship. After him someone must have turned up there. At that moment it falls from Borowski's eyes that it has not been taken into account that Tatjana's brother Benno was terrified of losing his sister. He has the fingerprint that Benno left on the glass he broke examined. It is identical to the print that was found on the cleaned yacht.

Clausen, who has meanwhile been released from custody, finds his dismissal at his place of work. He collapses crying. In the meantime, Borowski and Frieda Jung have arrived at Benno Matthies'. Benno admits to having killed Bruhns. Later he followed his sister and saw how she and Ostendorf had hugged. Then he stammered that he only wanted her to come home, nothing more, and collapsed because he had previously swallowed pills. He's taken to the hospital. When Clausen sees Ostendorfs, he wants revenge on him because he still assumes that he is Tatjana's murderer. Fortunately, the officers still present can clarify the situation in good time. Borowski's assistant Zainalov wants to know who the murderer is now. "The one who could least live without Tatiana," sums up Borowski, "her brother."

Subplot

When Borowski wants to go on a little sailing trip with his daughter Carla and her classmates , the murder of Bruhns intervenes. Again his friend Bernd Wiegand has to take care of Carla.

To Alim Zainalov's displeasure, Borowski gives the gay bouncer his cell phone number and, contrary to his better judgment, indicates that his assistant is not averse to men.
