Borowski and the children of Gaarden is a television film from the crime series Tatort , which was first broadcast on March 29, 2015 on Das Erste , ORF 2 and SRF 1 . In his 25th case, the Kiel chief inspector Klaus Borowski ( Axel Milberg ) is investigating together with inspector candidate Sarah Brandt ( Sibel Kekilli ) in the Gaarden district of Kiel .

action

The 60-year-old Onno Steinhaus is found dead in the focal point of Gaarden in Kiel . Apart from a group of children, no one seems to have had any contact with the neglected man.

Klaus Borowski and Sarah Brandt quickly find out that Steinhaus has a criminal record for sexual abuse and that a few days earlier he was said to have molested the young person Timo Scholz. Timo denies this and defends Steinhaus, because he was the only one who always had time for the children and also had parties with them. When questioning the neighbors, however, the investigators look into an abyss of poverty and indifference. Everyone knew why Steinhaus had a criminal record, but they still left the children alone with him. Even Torsten Rausch, the police officer responsible for the district , whom Sarah Brandt knows from before, has long since surrendered in view of the social neglect of the district. He has come to terms with the situation and maintains a confidential relationship with the residents. This in turn leads Borowski to the thesis that intoxication could possibly have practiced vigilante justice.

Sarah Brandt finds a video on an online platform that shows Onno Steinhaus being kicked and mocked by children and young people. The investigators suspect the murderer to be among them, Timo in particular looks depressed and reacts irritably to Borowski's questions. He denies that Steinhaus touched him, but Timo's girlfriend Sheryl claims the opposite. Borowski then looks at him as the main suspect and interrogates him.

Timo's little brother Leon suddenly claims that he saw someone come out of the victim's house on the day of the crime. Borowski tries to create a phantom image with his help . Sarah Brandt, however, has the impression that Leon's descriptions are not credible and Borowski realizes that the boy is lying to him. So he provokes him until he tells him that he had seen Torsten Rausch, but that he had forbidden him to tell.

Sarah Brandt also tracks down the police officer and finds out that Steinhaus had lived with Rausch's mother for several years and that Torsten was abused by him as a child. Rausch is arrested without further ado. He denies having killed Steinhaus because he would never be able to do it.

Borowski now suspects that Leon might have hit the old man because the boy liked Steinhaus's dog very much and could no longer bear how he had let out his frustration on the animal. This was confirmed when Leon Hassan, a boy from the neighborhood, attacked with a screwdriver and injured him. Borowski, who appears a short time later, calms the boy who is not yet of age.

Reviews

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ruled that the film was a classic “ Whodunit crime” that doesn't want too much or demand from its viewers, but is staged solidly to the core. And which makes it clear once again that the Kiel crime scene is simply one of the best. "

The Frankfurter Rundschau wrote: “The Gaarden district of Kiel, a former shipyard workers' district, is nowadays sometimes described in the media with the term ' ghetto ' or even ' no-go area '. (...) 'Borowski and the children of Gaarden' avoids any social romanticism, but shows how things are. "

Spiegel Online criticized the scriptwriters Eva Zahn and Volker A. Zahn for having written some extraordinary social dramas; here they unfortunately failed to “raise the issue of abuse and neglect to a new level”.

The media magazine DWDL.de wrote: “Eva and Volker A. Zahn wrote the book and embedded their murder search in a permanent clash of cultures. You have chosen Axel Milberg's commissioner Borowski. They use it to demonstrate the distance that lies between the worlds. Borowski, the fine, always a bit blasé and distinguished character, suddenly stands in front of kids who have nothing more to lose, who deconstruct the authority given qua office in seconds, who only have a tired smile on their ID card. "

“A crime scene well worth seeing”, Stern.de judged and wrote: “The world into which 'Borowski and the children of Gaarden' introduces the audience is so sad. The film proceeds very carefully. He doesn't gloss over anything. But never reveals his characters, even if they are lousy, sadistic guys. At the same time, the episode manages to loosen up the gloom a little with contrasting humor. "

For Focus Online, the crime thriller is a "critical social drama ". Actors, script and director are "all excellent and make sure that it is worth switching on".
