Gaarden is first mentioned in a document in 1210 when the Preetz Monastery was founded . Gaarden-Ost and Gaarden-Süd emerged from the two villages of Hemminghestorpe and Wulvesbrooke. The Mühlenau, at which there was a mill of the Preetz monastery and which now runs mainly underground, marked the natural border between the two villages.

After the founding of three large shipyards on the east bank between the Hörn and the Schwentine in the 1860s ( Norddeutsche Schiffbaugesellschaft (Germaniawerft) , Königliche / Kaiserliche Werft Kiel , Kieler Schiffswerft (Howaldtswerke) ), Gaarden slowly developed from a village to a district. After 1871, when Kiel was named a Imperial War Port and more and more workers were employed in the shipyards, the community grew rapidly. In 1871 only 2715 inhabitants were recorded, in 1910 there were already 30,427 inhabitants.

Gaarden-Ost was incorporated into Kiel in 1901; Gaarden-Süd followed nine years later. The economic and military provisions of the Versailles Peace Treaty after the First World War hit the shipyards particularly hard, with the result that the unemployment figures rose and the population stagnated. Therefore, in 1923, Kronsburg was added just like other parts of the city of Kiel, so that Gaarden was no longer part of the peripheral area.

After the Second World War , the edges of Gaarden-Ost looked like a lunar landscape. The extensive destruction of the district resulted on the one hand from the submarine production in the shipyards, but also from the tactic of fire bomb carpets on residential areas , primarily issued by Arthur Harris . Bombs and the characteristic weights of stick incendiary bombs can still be found in many of Kiel's gardens . From 1911 to 1961 Gaarden was the railway station of the Kleinbahn Kiel – Segeberg , whose tracks were removed in 1962.

In the second half of the 20th century, life in Gaarden was initially closely linked to the shipyards. The ups and downs of the shipbuilding industry influenced this district like no other. From the end of the 1950s, after all the shipyard bunkers were blown up, there was an upswing, first due to the economic miracle , but in the early 1980s, competition and dumping prices from the Far East triggered a shipyard crisis in many other countries (including Germany), which led to the European The community decided to allow subsidies . The crisis remained noticeable at HDW , the only remaining shipyard on the east bank. At the beginning of the 1980s there were around 12,000 employees there; in 1990 there were 5000 and in 1995 3751. The geopolitical situation then changed with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War.

Location and infrastructure

Gaarden-Ost lies on the Hörn on a formerly moorland step that rises from 15 meters to 25 meters above sea level. In addition to the fjord, Gaarden is surrounded by Kiel-Südfriedhof , Hassee , Meimersdorf , Kronsburg , Wellsee , Elmschenhagen and Ellerbek . Only a small part of Gaarden-Süd still reaches the city limits today. The Theodor-Heuss-Ring or Konrad-Adenauer-Damm ( Bundesstrasse 76 ) separates Gaarden-Süd from Gaarden-Ost on the east-west axis. The Ostring ( Bundesstrasse 502 ) runs in a T-shape across Gaarden-Ost, and to the south, Kiel is connected to the federal road network with Neue Hamburger Strasse ( Bundesstrasse 404 ). About the Hörnbrücke is Kiel Central for pedestrians and cyclists to reach.

The name Gaarden probably goes back to the fact that a large area of both villages was once leased as a garden. Even today, Gaarden includes large green spaces such as the Vieburger wood , especially in the south, i.e. in Gaarden-Süd . The Volkspark , for example, offers relaxation , which was built as a shipyard park in 1899 and was named after Horst Wessel from 1936 to 1945 . It is still considered a park well worth seeing today. The center of Gaarden is the market square Vinetaplatz , named in 1903 after the cruiser SMS Vineta . Its name goes back to the trading town Vineta , which sank in a legend in front of the mouth of the Oder in the Baltic Sea .

Up until the end of May 2018 there was a swimming pool in Gaarden, as well as the Katzheide outdoor pool , the smokehouse event center , a youth hostel and a district library as well as various churches and mosques and a vocational school .

Gaarden has good local amenities. Elisabethstraße is the main shopping street, which is set up as a pedestrian zone adjacent to Vinetaplatz . Many retail stores have also opened in Stoschstrasse, Kaiserstrasse and Kirchenweg.

The Kiel – Schönberger Strand railway runs through Kiel-Gaarden ; The Kiel – Segeberg small railway also ran along here.

Social problems

Gaarden-Ost, in particular, is characterized by immigration ; different nationalities live there. In addition to a diverse cultural mix with small shops and restaurants, this also creates conflicts. That is why Gaarden-Ost is considered a social hotspot. The rents are lower despite the proximity to the city center, but in view of the generally increasing rents in large cities, it has become more difficult to find a cheap apartment in Gaarden, especially since Kiel is a university town. The former city-owned social housing is now owned by the Vonovia SE housing company and has dropped out of the rental price control , so that the rent for many apartments in Gaarden is increased every year. 600 of the 3,000 Vonovia apartments in Gaarden are being extensively renovated. The proportion of unemployed and people with low incomes is high in the 16th district of Kiel. The unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2011 was 15.2%; around 42% of Gaarden residents receive basic security benefits for jobseekers ( SGB II and SGB III ). In 2018 this share rose to 64%. Furthermore, the proportion of people with a migration background is 53% in Gaarden, which is above average; this is particularly reflected in the schools there in the high proportion of children of foreign origin.

In 2006 it became known that Al-Qaida terrorism suspect Redouane El-H., Who was arrested in Hamburg . ran an internet café in Gaarden. The mosque of the Kiel Islamic Community in Gaarden was regularly visited by the suitcase bomb bomber who lived in Projensdorf .

In the Mayor election on March 15, 2009, the turnout in Gaarden was below 20%.

Part of the social problems of the district was subsequently addressed by Borowski and the children of Gaarden in the crime series Tatort on March 29, 2015. In episode 4 of the series Hartes Deutschland - Leben im Brennpunkt on the private broadcaster RTL II , broadcast on October 10, 2019 , various real fates were documented.

A hotel project is intended to enhance Gaarden's image.
