Dafoe was born in Madoc, Ontario, the son of a doctor. In 1909 he started working in Callander and spent the rest of his life there.

On May 28, 1934 he was called to the birth of a multiple birth in the Dionne family, in which both the children and the mother survived, which was regarded as an international sensation. After the parents were deprived of their custody and he took care of the children under guardianship, he gained increasing media attention. He got rich by using the children as advertising media for a wide variety of products and having them displayed by the government in an amusement park, which at first received positive attention from the public with great interest, but was later heavily criticized.

For his work with the Dionne quintuplets he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .

He can be seen in the documentary Five Times Five .
