The Hörnbrücke is a three-part folding bridge (three -point bascule bridge ) for pedestrians and cyclists over the Hörn in the port of Kiel , the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein , which is the only bridge in the world that works on this principle (three -point folding principle).

Location and function

opened bridge during the Kiel week

The pedestrian bridge was completed in 1997 and connects the city center on the west bank of the Hörn with the Gaarden-Ost district , the Germaniahafen with the adjacent high-rise center and the Norwegenkai on the east bank , directly opposite Kiel Central Station . It is one of the architectural and technical attractions of the city and is an important traffic route for pedestrians and cyclists. It was created primarily to connect the Norway quay on the east bank of the Hörn with Kiel city center and the train station.

In addition to its importance for ferry traffic to Norway , the Hörnbrücke has also taken on an important role in connecting the Kiel district of Gaarden-Ost to the city center and is such a busy route to and from the event locations around the Hörn during Kiel Week that the crossing is only permitted in one direction at times or its crossing is prohibited altogether.

The Hörnbrücke is scheduled to be opened to ship traffic around twelve times a day for a quarter of an hour each time and also if necessary (for example during the Kiel Week for regatta escort trips).

Architecture and construction

The bridge is 25.6 meters long, 5 meters wide and made of steel. The sidewalk, with lamps embedded in the floor, was originally made of wood and was replaced by a non-slip synthetic surface in 2012. The delicate bridge is considered a tourist attraction in Kiel because of its unusual construction and its exposed location. Their construction costs amounted to 19.9 million DM (about 11 million euros). Not least for this, it was initially viewed with skepticism by many people from Kiel. The completion of the bridge was delayed several times, so that initially a hydraulically operated push bridge was built for about one million DM , which ensures the crossing for the passengers to and from Oslo . It is located right next to the folding bridge and is used as a replacement bridge during repair or maintenance work. The bridge was planned by Volkwin Marg from the architects Gerkan, Marg und Partner and Jörg Schlaich from the engineering office Schlaich Bergermann und Partner .

Trivia

The Hörnbrücke is also the beginning or end of a tourist holiday route that opened in May 2004 , the German Ferry Route from Bremervörde to the Kiel Fjord .

Because of the technical problems that were frequent at the beginning, the Hörnbrücke was often only mockingly called "Klappen-Nix-Brücke". However, these deficiencies have been corrected and meanwhile it "works" without any problems, it only has to be shut down temporarily for the maintenance work mentioned above. Then the shovel bridge is used as an alternative, so that the connection from the west to the east bank is ensured at all times.
