history
Ellerbek was originally a fishing village . It was probably created in the 13th century. It was here that the most famous Kiel delicacy , the Kiel sprat , was invented. Ellerbek probably got its name from an Erlenbach that flowed into the Kiel Fjord . With the appointment of Kiel as a naval port in 1871, Ellerbek was shaped by the shipbuilding industry and the navy . This forced the population to move to Wellingdorf . The village of Ellerbek was almost completely rebuilt by the new shipyard. In order to still remember the old fishing village of Ellerbek, a single house was preserved as a museum building. However, this house was destroyed in World War II, so that nothing remains of the old fishing village. Today's Ellerbek can be described as a typical workers' settlement , which arose in the course of industrialization, was destroyed in the Second World War and then rebuilt. The naval arsenal Arsenalbetrieb Kiel is located on the waterside of Ellerbek, so that there is no longer any free access to the water from Ellerbek.
