The Exerzierplatz district takes its name from the square of the same name, which is now used as a market and parking lot. The people of Kiel have been calling this place “Exer” for generations. history

Excerpt from map from 1786: Parade ground and small and large gallows pond, far north (above) of the gallows

In the 15th century, the public executions in the old market in the center of the city of Kiel stopped . A gallows far outside the city gates was erected in the west of what is now the parade ground. In the years that followed, the adjacent lakes were called the Large and Small Gallows Pond. Until the 18th century, the area of today's parade ground was almost undeveloped. From 1803 to 1885, the University's Botanical Garden was located between the streets of Prüne, Schülperbaum and Kirchhofallee. In 1806 and 1853 city plans show buildings only in the southeast of the district. The gallows ponds were filled in until 1887.
