The old market (from 1242 to 1987 market ) in Kiel is the historical center of Kiel's old town. Various restaurants and shops have settled around the square .

location

The Old Market is located in Kiel's Altstadt district , at the northern end of Holstenstrasse . The Nikolaikirche is right on the Alter Markt . The last remaining brewery in Kiel , the Kieler Brewery , is one of the numerous catering establishments and , as an inn, offers not only food but also home-brewed beer.

history

The old market used to be the highest point in the old city of Kiel. Everyday goods and fresh food, as well as flowers, were sold in the market. At that time, the market square was still at ground level, so that at that time the flow of traffic could still be guided from Holstenstrasse to Dänische Strasse diagonally to the Alter Markt.

Old Market Kiel around 1868

In the 17th century, the so-called Persian houses , which also architecturally closed off the square in front of the Nikolaikirche, were of particular importance in the 17th century . The Persian houses were built as so-called pack houses , which is where they get their name from. They were built because Duke Friedrich III. directing the silk trade from Persia to Kiel, and then wanted to store the silk in the packing houses. This plan failed, however, so that houses were converted into council apartments.

Until 1943, Kiel's old town hall was also located on the market square , which was also of particular importance because the provisional government for Schleswig and Holstein was proclaimed here . The old town hall was completely destroyed except for a few cellars during the Second World War .

During the Second World War, the entire square was almost completely destroyed, but rebuilt after the end of the war and then used as a parking lot until it was redesigned in 1972. There are still a few “shell buildings” from the 19th century around the old market.

Todays use

In 1972 the old market was completely redesigned according to the plans of the architect Wilhelm Neveling and received its current form (paved depression with pavilions and granite stones in the middle). Since then, numerous catering establishments have settled on and around this square. The original shape of the market square has largely been preserved to this day, but the redesign and lowering of the square in 1972 separated it from the connection to the road network that had existed until then. The building status adjacent to the market square was also subject to ongoing changes. Since 1975 the Kieler Umschlag has been taking place again on the Alter Markt and in Holstenstrasse .
