Location of the old town in Kiel

Altstadt is a district of Kiel . With 34.7 hectares (as of December 31, 2010), the old town is the smallest district in Kiel in terms of area. Compared to the pre-war period, the old town of Kiel has only a few inhabitants, at the end of 2014 there were 654. Contrary to popular belief, the historical building fabric was not only destroyed during the war, but was partly torn down from the city around 1900 when Kiel had suddenly grown. A new building area has been created at the Alte Feuerwache with condominiums, townhouses and student apartments as well as a shared underground car park.

history

Kiel was founded between 1233 and 1242 by Count Adolf IV von Holstein on a former peninsula measuring around 18 hectares (today's old town). There was a connection to the mainland only in the northeast. Otherwise, the fjord and the inlet “ Kleiner Kiel ” made for an area that was easy to defend. The Old Market and the following streets were laid out when the city was founded : Dänische Strasse , Flämische Strasse , Haßstrasse , Holstenstrasse (until the 15th century was called Brückenstrasse ), Kehdenstrasse , Küterstrasse , Pfaffenstrasse , Schloßstrasse (formerly Burgstrasse ) and Schuhmacherstrasse . In addition, the Nikolaikirche was built in the southeast of the market square and a castle was built to protect the only land connection in the northeast of the peninsula. In the 15th century this castle was expanded into a palace . At the narrowest point of the Kleiner Kiel, the 50 m long Holsten Bridge created a connection to the “ Via Regia ” long-distance road. The Holsten Bridge has meanwhile been torn open in favor of the Holsten Fleet.
