Stinkviertel: Howaldtstrasse seen from Krausstrasse

The Stinkviertel is a district of Kiel in the Ravensberg district . In its almost completely rectangular shape, it is bounded in the east by the Westring, in the south by Gutenbergstrasse, in the west by Christian-Kruse-Strasse and in the north by Krausstrasse or Schauenburgerstrasse and the Kiel Innovation and Technology Center ( KITZ ) . The area consists mainly of Wilhelminian style buildings in closed construction, most of which were built between 1900 and 1925. Some houses have smaller apartments that have been rented to poorer working-class families, others also have larger ones with three rooms. There is also a complex of a cooperative rental house built in two construction phases, which is similar in design to the houses in the marine district . Today, many of the residents are students at the Christian Albrechts University, which is located nearby to the north .

The name comes from a time when the contents of the " gold buckets " were delivered to a nearby factory and processed: From 1901 to 1919 manure that could be dispatched was produced from faeces in a steam process by treatment with sulfuric acid .
