Location of Gaarden-Süd and Kronsburg in Kiel

Gaarden-Süd and Kronsburg form the district No. 13 of Kiel .

history

The name Gaarden , originally Ghardin and later Gharden, probably comes from the Low German word Goarn, which means garden or enclosed property. The Gaarden-Süd district developed from a settlement that was first mentioned in 1462 under the name Wulvesbrok. Even today there is a street in Kiel called Wulfsbrook. In 1769, the entire southern Gaarden became a grand princely and in 1773 royal possession. The eastern part of Gaarden emerged from the village of Hemminghestorp and belonged to Preetz monastery for a long time . An unofficial distinction between the two parts of the city takes place due to the former ownership structure with the designation "Fürstlich Gaarden" for Gaarden-Süd and "Klösterlich Gaarden" for Gaarden-Ost. The two former villages and the current districts are separated by the Mühlenau stream, which now runs mainly underground.

On April 1, 1910 the independence of the village from the former Bordesholm district ended . It was incorporated into Kiel with Hassee , Hasseldieksdamm , Ellerbek and Wellingdorf . The city of Kiel grew by 618 hectares . The district of Kronsburg was incorporated in 1923. Today Kronsburg has grown together with the Poppenbrügge district of the Moorsee district. Kronsburg is separated from Gaarden-Süd by railroad tracks.
