The artistic preoccupation in assemblages with mass-produced items such as packaging or banknotes from the mid-1950s made Rivers a pioneer of Pop Art. He belonged to the New York School .

From 1961 to 1962 Rivers stayed in Paris , where it came to collaboration with Jean Tinguely ; In 1967 Howard Kanovitz was his collaboration partner in London . In the 1960s he expanded his range of artistic expression by incorporating elements made of wood or cardboard into his works or by using electric light.
