The old town hall was the town hall of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital Kiel until it was replaced by the new Kiel town hall in 1911 .

location

The old town hall was located in the old town of Kiel , southeast of the old market .

history

The town hall, built around 1300, was rebuilt in 1596 and 1670, and for the last time in 1845, when it got its neo-Gothic facade. In 1943 it was completely destroyed except for a few cellars during World War II.

In the course of the German March Revolution and the Schleswig-Holstein uprising , the provisional government of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein met in the Old Town Hall on March 24, 1848 . The country received the first democratic constitution on the soil of what is now the Federal Republic of Germany , but it only remained in force for a few years. A memorial plaque attached to the town hall 25 years later to commemorate the significant event in Schleswig-Holstein and German history did not survive the bombing raids.

Today only the cellar vaults of the former town hall exist. Attempts to reconstruct the building have so far failed.

Town halls of the city of Kiel

When the old town hall on the old market became too small, the current town hall , with its distinctive tower, was built between 1907 and 1911 in the suburb on today's town hall square west of the old town. It has long been referred to as the “New Town Hall”. In 2000 the house on Rathausplatz no longer offered enough space for the municipal offices. That is why parts of the city administration have been relocated to the building of the former Oberpostdirektion in Andreas-Gayk- Strasse since 2008 at the latest . Since then, this building has been called the “New Town Hall”.
