The Schwanenseepark is a green area in the Ellerbek district of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital, Kiel . It is located on the east bank of the Kiel Fjord between Werftstraße, Lütjenburger Straße, Franziusallee and Hangstraße. The approximately 11 hectare park area is crossed by the Ostring and connects at the southern end to the City Council Hahn Park .
history
The park was laid out as a private garden area with restaurants at the end of the 19th century and was a popular destination. The farmer Johannes Stange had dammed the Tröndelbach into six ponds for his fish farming and built a park restaurant in Ellerbek . The guests came to have a coffee, stroll and row in the garden, which was then known as Little Paris in Kiel . "Architecture and natural beauty shake hands" and "People cannot ask for more poetry" wrote the Kieler Nachrichten . After the city of Kiel was able to acquire the site after the end of the First World War and released it to the public, the ponds were also used for swimming.
During the Second World War , the park was badly damaged in the air raids on Kiel and overgrown in the post-war period. The green area was forgotten, the ponds silted up, lines of sight and paths grew. The citizens' initiative AG Schwanenseepark began in 2008 with the revival of the original character of the park landscape. When the citizens' initiative became active, the Kiel city administration again increasingly invested in the Schwanenseepark and participated in the redesign.
