The Volkspark , originally called Werftpark , is a green area in the Ellerbek district of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital, Kiel . It is located southeast of the city center on the opposite side of the Kiel Fjord between Werftstrasse and the Ostring. The 15.2 hectare park area is around 500 meters long and 300 meters wide.
history
With the determination of Kiel to the Imperial War Port in 1871, the cityscape and the east bank of the Kiel Fjord changed. Due to the growing large shipyards Howaldtswerke, Germaniawerft and the Kaiserliche Werft , the villages of Ellerbek and Gaarden changed from fishing villages to workers' settlements. The Volkspark was created by the welfare association for the members of the Imperial Shipyard as a shipyard park and recreational area for the shipyard employees.
The park was built from 1893 to 1899 on what was then called Fink-Berg and was inaugurated on May 13, 1899. During the construction of the Imperial Shipyard , the excavation from the shipyard basin was deposited there, creating a hilly area that was terraced when the park was built. The main entrance to the park was on Kaiserstrasse. In 1921 the city of Kiel took over the park from the welfare association and redesigned it into a public park from 1923 according to the plans of city planning officer Willy Hahn and garden architect Leberecht Migge . During the National Socialist era , the shipyard park was renamed Horst-Wessel-Park and was badly damaged in the air raids on Kiel during the Second World War . In the first street renaming campaign after the war, the park was given its name Werftpark back in June 1945 . In December 1947 the city council decided on its current name Volkspark .
