In the Bundestag elections from 1949 to 1972, the constituency of Kiel was number 6. Since the Bundestag election in 1976 it has been number 5.

In the federal elections in 1949 and 1953, the constituency of Kiel included the area of ​​the city of Kiel without the electoral districts 23 and 26 to 42 and in the elections in 1957 and 1961 without the districts of Wik and Ravensberg, which were given up to the constituency of Rendsburg . In the federal elections from 1965 to 1972, the constituency of the city of Kiel was made up without the districts of Friedrichsort, Holtenau, Pries and Schilksee, which had been transferred to the constituency of Schleswig - Eckernförde .
