Sebastian Blumenthal (born August 4, 1974 in Bergen auf Rügen ) is a German politician ( FDP ) and was a member of the German Bundestag from 2009 to 2013 .

Life and work

In 1992 he completed his school education in Kiel, initially with secondary school leaving certificate . After training as a communications electronics technician and after doing community service, he passed the technical college entrance qualification in 1998. This was followed by studying multimedia production in the media department at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences , which he graduated with a diploma in 2002.

Since 2002 Blumenthal has been working as a consultant in an IT management consultancy. In addition, from November 19, 2011, he served for one year as an assessor in the Presidium of Wikimedia Germany , according to the first report, he supported the organizational development and association communication.

Blumenthal became a member of the FDP in 1992 while still at school. From 1992 to 1993 he was chairman of the Liberal Schoolchildren in Kiel, and then from 1994 to 1996 district chairman of the Young Liberals . From 1996 to 2000 he was a member of the state board of the Young Liberals in Schleswig-Holstein, including 1998–2000 as state chairman. From February 15, 2010 to July 15, 2017 he was chairman of the FDP district association in Kiel.

In the 2005 Bundestag elections , he ran for a lower position on the list and was therefore unable to enter parliament. In 2009 he ran as a direct candidate for the FDP in Kiel and won a seat in the German Bundestag via the state list. Here Blumenthal was a member of the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs and the Committee on Culture and Media (chairman of the New Media subcommittee ). He was also a member of the Internet and Digital Society Study Commission . In terms of content, he focused on network policy , where he advocated extensive deregulation of the Internet.

Between 2010 and 2012, Blumenthal was a member of the FDP's policy committee under the then general secretary Christian Lindner (after his resignation as general secretary under his successor Patrick Döring) and in this function contributed to the new basic program of the FDP, which was presented at the FDP party congress on 22. As one of only three FDP MPs, Sebastian Blumenthal voted in the 68th session of the German Bundestag of the electoral period on October 28, 2010 against the extension of the life of the nuclear power plants.
