Publius Cominius Clemens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Cominius Clemens (full name form Publius Cominius Publi filius Claudia Clemens ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD . Individual stations in his career are known through three inscriptions.

The military career of Clemens, which consisted of the usual Tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order , is evidenced by an inscription that was found in Concordia Sagittaria and that is dated 167/200. First he received his state horse from the emperor ( honorato equo publico ). He then took over as prefect of the Cohors V Lingonum , which was stationed in the province of Dacia Porolissensis . He then became a tribunus militum in the Legio II Adiutrix pia fidelis , which had its main camp in Aquincum in the province of Pannonia inferior . With this legion he took part in the Parthian War of Lucius Verus and received two military awards for his achievements: a Corona muralis and a Hasta pura . The third stage was the command as prefect of the Ala I singularium civium Romanorum , which was stationed in Raetia .

After his military career, Clemens took on civil functions in administration; the individual offices are documented by two further inscriptions that were found in Concordia Sagittaria and Aquileia and which are dated to 180/190 and 186/190, respectively. Initially, as Procurator Augusti , he was entrusted with the administration of inheritance tax ( XX hereditatium ) in the province of Hispania citerior . Then he was responsible for the gladiator schools in northern Italy ( procurator Augusti ad familias gladiatorias Transpadanam or per Italiam ); both posts were linked to an annual income of 60,000 sesterces . He then became Subpraefectus annonae in Rome and then Procurator Augusti in the province of Dacia Apulensis ; both offices were linked to an annual income of 100,000 sesterces. This was followed by positions associated with an annual income of 200,000 sesterces: he was successively Procurator Augusti in the province of Lusitania , Procurator Augusti of the inheritance tax in Rome and praepositus a censibus , also in Rome. He reached the peak of his career as prefect of the main fleets stationed in Italy ( praefecto classium praetoriarum Misenensis et Ravennatis ).

Clemens was registered in the Tribus Claudia . It probably came from Concordia Sagittaria , where two of the inscriptions were also found. The inscription from Aquileia was made by his wife Desticia Plotina , daughter of Titus Desticius Iuba . Clemens was pontiff in his hometown and also patron saint in Concordia , Aquileia , Parma and Venafrum .
