Trapped is a TV movie from the crime series Tatort . The broadcast produced by WDR was first broadcast on May 17, 2020 on Erste , ORF 2 and SRF 1 . In this 1132nd crime scene episode, the Cologne commissioners Ballauf and Schenk determine their 79th case.
action
Prof. Klaus Krüger, renowned chief physician of a psychiatric clinic, is found shot dead in his house. The inspectors Max Ballauf and Freddy Schenk are investigating. However, Ballauf himself is currently being treated: after he shot his colleague Melanie Sommer in the episode Kaputt in action, he was plagued by feelings of guilt and nightmares. He doesn't let his colleagues get close to him. However, the current investigations are gradually developing therapeutic effects.
The murder victim and the lawyer Florian Weiss were members of the same tennis club "Grün-Weiß". The psychiatrist Prof. Klaus Krüger had to fear for his license to practice medicine because he had raped the daughter of the club host Buschmann at a club party. Weiss settled the matter by arranging a hush money . The investigators discover that Krüger could be blackmailed through Weiss, but Weiss lacks the motive for the crime. However, there are other traces that point to the lawyer: His weapon is found near Kruger’s apartment. It is the weapon of the murder. Weiss even found a fingerprint on the dead man's watch. He admits to have been at the scene, but he asserts that his friend Kruger was already dead on the floor. The reason for the nightly visit was a text message from Krüger to Weiss: He had to talk about "Julia". He could "no longer". Julia Frey is a patient at the psychiatric clinic and has suffered from a borderline personality disorder since her parents' accidental death . She is Weiss' sister-in-law, his wife's sister. Christine Weiss has taken on the care of Julia, who was also diagnosed as schizophrenic . In addition, she and her husband raise the sick child as her foster child .
Julia develops a special conversation relationship with Ballauf, who is thereby additionally motivated to take care of her situation. Gradually it turns out that the Weiss couple have a motive for keeping Julia imprisoned in the clinic. Her sister is very fond of looking after the child, as she is sterile herself. Julia, on the other hand, would have preferred an abortion . Ballauf has Julia's medical record checked: she is on medication that does not relieve the symptoms, but exacerbate them. In itself she is relatively healthy. The psychiatrist Krüger deliberately did not discharge her as cured, on the initiative of Weiss.
In a subplot, nighttime approaches of the nurse Dennis to the attractive Julia are shown again and again. He takes cellphone photos of the sleeping woman, exposes her, touches her. After Ballauf has obtained the dismissal of Julia, she meets her admirer in the disco, but doesn't want anything more to do with him. Then he hangs himself. The inspectors find voyeuristic photos of Julia in the caretaker's apartment. When asked about Julia by the inspectors, the ward doctor reports that Julia tried to be released from the closed psychiatry through the care court . Because of a false report, she did not succeed in doing this. On the night of the murder, Dennis Dienst and Ballauf suspected that the nurse had let Julia escape from the clinic that night. Julia had then committed the act to obtain a police investigation that would then free her from the clinic. Ballauf realizes that he has been manipulated and used by Julia - as has the nurse Dennis.
After long, blonde hair was found in the carer's car on the driver's side, Ballauf confronts Julia in the bathroom of the Weiss family. Her threat of suicide by means of a hair dryer in the bath water has no effect on Ballauf because he saw through Julia. She says goodbye to her sister and her son, whose father is the brother-in-law, and lets herself be taken away.

reception
Reviews
Der Spiegel rated the film with seven out of ten points. Author Christian Buß judged that it was a “pleasantly risk-taking” crime scene , which the audience felt a little bit and in which “reality and perceived reality were sometimes blurred.” The “central female figure” was “more important in all clinical explanations around her [...] as a case study ”. But the film had "some difficulties in making the twists in the plot always seem quite plausible."
The film service also tended to be satisfied, rating the film with three out of five possible stars. It is a “straightforward, solidly staged” crime thriller that also tries clichés, but is convincing in the figure drawing. The “subdued tension” held up “despite predictability and some papery dialogues” until the end.
The NZZ author saw the film as a “strong case” in which the misconduct of the characters involved was “roughly and stringently connected”.
