occupation

Brandmal is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The report produced by WDR was broadcast on October 19, 2008 in the first program of ARD . It is the 41st case of the investigative team Max Ballauf and Freddy Schenk and the 708th crime scene episode.

action

A young woman dies as a result of smoke inhalation. The inspectors Ballauf and Schenk are called and investigate in the Cologne "problem district". The fire in the basement of the house was obviously set on purpose and the carbon monoxide gases that were then spread around the house were able to reach the tenant unnoticed. The house owner, Hans-Dieter Lange, is disturbed because he thought his tenant was on vacation. Lange immediately suspects a girl who lives in the refugee home across the street . He had recently caught her stealing in his shop and she threatened to set fire to his shop. The discovery of a medallion in the cellar fueled this suspicion. It belongs to Lutvija Demiri, one of the Roma children who has been suspected by the police several times. The commissioners question the girl, but they cannot do much because she is a minor and therefore not of legal age. Before they know it, she escapes them and evades further questioning.

After it turned out that the victim was nine weeks pregnant and the boyfriend, Kai Bracht, is not particularly shaken by the death of his girlfriend, they think it is entirely possible that he was the cause of the fire. He is also known to be very jealous. But the review of his alibi lets him out as a perpetrator.

Ballauf and Schenk also determine in another direction. They quickly felt the resentment of the Cologne population towards the home. For years she has tried to defend herself against the unloved residents, but so far has not been able to achieve anything. Arson deliberately caused by the asylum seekers could be very helpful in their efforts. In addition, the homeowner Hans-Dieter Lange is in debt and the insurance money should come in handy for him. A short time later, he was found hanged in his grocery store. For Ballauf, this is an indication that Lange may not have been able to cope with the death of his tenant.

Lutvija Demiri is now discovered in her hiding place by a motorcyclist who is obviously on the hunt for her. On the run from him, she runs in front of a car and is taken into custody by Ballauf. He manages to build up some trust in the girl who is extremely dismissive. He accommodates her in a hotel because he suspects that the motorcyclist is still looking for her. During the conversations with her, Ballauf realized that there was no way she could be an arsonist, since her father was burned to death before she fled Kosovo and she is still suffering from the trauma . It is possible that she saw the perpetrator without knowing it, which is why he wants to silence her. After Lutvija was able to escape police custody a second time, she was again in danger because the motorcyclist found her. Ballauf and Schenk, who followed Lutvija, catch the man in the act and arrest him. It's about Kai Bracht, who says that he wanted to avenge his girlfriend because he also thinks the girl is the perpetrator.

So the question of who was the arsonist initially remains unanswered. In the end, a lead leads the investigators to Stefan Woditsch, a sporty young man who admits to having been commissioned by Hans-Dieter Lange to start a fire in the basement of his shop. He did not want anyone to be harmed.

background

The chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, Romani Rose, had expressed massive criticism of the "crime scene" in an open letter to WDR director Monika Piel before it was first broadcast. In his opinion, “Brandmal” contained both negative clichés and discriminatory stereotypes about Roma and demanded that the episode be not broadcast.

The WDR rejected the criticism: “In contrast to the allegations of the Central Council, we are convinced that a carefully researched book and a carefully staged film deal with the problem in a very differentiated way. The film just doesn't confirm the usual clichés. On the contrary, in keeping with the tradition of the more socially critical “Tatort” in Cologne, it breaks down prejudices. "

The film was shot from November 15, 2007 to December 14, 2007 in Cologne and the surrounding area.

Reviews

"Criminalistically simple, well-intentioned, made mixed up!"

“If you can blame the film, it's that it exaggerates the good intentions that appear in every single scene. And that's why this is unfortunately not a good 'crime scene' either, the noble message determines the drawing of the characters, the dialogues and the dramaturgy. Only at the very end does the film dissolve the clichés with a nice punch line, which it fights paralyzingly and woodenly for ninety minutes. And only this punchline can reconcile you with the film.
