Neighbors is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The report produced by WDR was broadcast on March 26, 2017 on Erste and SRF 1 . In this 1016th crime scene episode, the Cologne commissioners Ballauf and Schenk determine their 70th case.

The divorced in his mid-forties Werner Holtkamp falls from a bridge in front of a truck at night and is run over by it. The coroner finds that he was previously dead and had intercourse shortly before he died. Max Ballauf and Freddy Schenk find out that he was slain in his own bed at home. Holtkamp had lived in a single-family house in the neighborhood for three years, and two years ago his wife and daughter left him.

Investigators question the victim's neighbors. The married and frustrated Anne Möbius had an affair with Holtkamp because her husband Frank enjoyed other things on his business trips. Anne was jealous because Holtkamp was recently more interested in the young neighbor Sandra Voigt than in her. Sandra Voigt lives with her stepfather Leo Voigt and her eleven year old daughter Mira; Sandra's mother left the family when Sandra became pregnant. Holtkamp had an intense neighborhood dispute with Leo Voigt, initially because of a postponement of the once incorrectly measured common property line, and finally because of a row of cypresses planted too close to the new border . The neighboring Scholten family is also in the focus of the investigation - Jens Scholten is said to be Mira's father, as he had a relationship with Sandra at the time.

Ballauf and Schenk find out that Leo Voigt financed Jens Scholten's studies and continues to support him with monthly payments. When confronted, Scholten reveals that Leo is Mira's actual father and the payments are hush money. Tobias Reisser, Ballauf's and Schenk's assistant, checks the alleged place of residence of Sandra's mother, but she hasn't been seen there for over ten years. Finally it becomes apparent that she did not leave the family, but was murdered and buried in the Voigts' garden. Due to the shift in the property line, Holtkamp found the remains of the dead when he was planting the cypress trees.

Ballauf and Schenk confront Leo Voigt, who confesses to having killed his wife when she found out that Sandra was pregnant by him. He later also killed Holtkamp when he found the body. When Leo is taken away, however, Sandra admits the deeds: She was an unwanted and unloved child by her mother. When Leo became pregnant, she was urged by her mother to terminate the pregnancy and therefore killed her. Leo disposed of the body in the garden near the neighboring property. When Holtkamp found this planting the bushes, he blackmailed Sandra, who had to sleep with him. Sandra killed him during forced sex in his bed, and Leo also got rid of this corpse by throwing it off the bridge.
