Thomas Schubert (born August 15, 1993 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actor. The amateur actor gained fame through his leading role in the Austrian feature film Atmen (2011).

biography

The son of a dental technician and a teacher was born in Vienna, where he grew up with two siblings. Schubert spent a year with his family in Australia . He attended a general education high school (AHS) in the Vienna district of Donaustadt , but dropped out in the last school year before graduation to work as an actor.

Schubert came to acting by chance when, at the age of 17, he accompanied a friend to the open casting of Karl Markovics ' feature film Atmen (2011), which was advertised at various schools, among others. In his directorial debut, the well-known Austrian actor tells of a young prisoner who takes a job in a Viennese funeral home as an outdoor prisoner . Markovics had insisted on hiring an amateur actor for the lead role, which required the casting of all other actors. "I was looking for a non-professional actor because I didn't want a 22-year-old drama school graduate who would play an 18-year-old, I really wanted an 18-year-old who was still a kid at times," says Markovics.

Thomas Schubert was selected from around 300 candidates during three casting dates. Director Karl Markovics attached great importance to the fact that his leading actor remained authentic, so that he only gave Schubert basic knowledge of breathing and facial expressions. The biggest challenge when playing was keeping concentration during long rehearsals, said Schubert.

Breathing celebrated its premiere at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival 2011 in the side series Quinzaine des réalisateurs , where the film was awarded the Europa Award . The "taciturn, documentary-looking social drama" was critically acclaimed, shown at more than 60 film festivals and awarded prizes, as well as being selected as Austria's candidate for the Oscar abroad at the 2012 Academy Awards. Likewise praise was given to the amateur actor Thomas Schubert, who received the Actor Award of the Sarajevo Film Festival and the Austrian Film Award for his acting debut . The Austrian daily Kurier certified his talent for his sensitive and withdrawn play as an introverted juvenile convict Roman Kogler. According to the criticism of the German film service , the inner drama is played on the face of the "great amateur actor". The Süddeutsche Zeitung also pointed to Schubert's expressive face, whose eyes could get very big at the look. "Always in a retreat position, he has to learn not to avert his gaze, to endure and counter the looks of others," said the Süddeutsche Zeitung about his film character.

Thomas Schubert described the success of breathing as a “great turning point in life”. After his feature film debut, he worked on the Austrian television series Schnell Determined in October 2011 . He had other roles in the ORF miniseries Pregau , the television film Das Sacher and the crime series SOKO Donau .
