action

Egon Schiele : Death and the Maiden , 1915, Belvedere , Vienna

The relationship between the painter Egon Schiele and five women who are important to him is told: in addition to his younger sister Gerti, these are above all his lover Wally Neuzil , his wife Edith Harms and his sister-in-law Adele, as well as the variety dancer Moa Nahuimir. After his father's death, sixteen-year-old Egon and his twelve-year-old sister Gerti traveled to the sea in Trieste in 1906 to paint them there. Gerti becomes his first muse . In the following years he developed a reputation as a provocative artist, his works are viewed as scandalous by Viennese society, he is brought to court for allegedly desecrating a thirteen-year-old. Despite all this, his patron and fatherly friend Gustav Klimt predicts a great future for him. Egon falls in love with Wally Neuzil, whom he immortalized in the eponymous painting Death and the Maiden . In 1915 he married his neighbor Edith Harms, who asked Egon to break up with Wally. Shortly before the end of the First World War, Schiele fell ill with the Spanish flu in autumn 1918 and was dying. While Gerti tries to save her brother's life, memories of other women are awakened who influenced Schiele and his art significantly.

The shooting took place in two blocks from February 17, 2015 and, after a break, from July 29, 2015 on a total of 40 days of shooting; The film was shot in Vienna , Lower Austria , Luxembourg , Český Krumlov and Trieste . The film was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund and Filmstandort Austria , the State of Lower Austria , the Luxembourg Film Fund, Eurimages , and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation was also involved. The film was produced by Novotny & Novotny Filmproductions , with Amour Fou Luxemburg as co-producer . Philippe Kohn was responsible for the sound, Uli Simon for the costume design and Götz Weidner for the production design .

Hilde Berger developed the script together with director Dieter Berner based on her biographical novel Tod und Mädchen: Egon Schiele und die Frauen (Boehlau-Verlag, 2009).

The trailer for the film was blocked by Facebook on the grounds that it showed nude pictures; The film is approved for ages 12 and over in Germany, which does not speak for pornographic or youth-endangering content. The film distributor described the fact that Egon Schiele was also accused of pornography in court during his lifetime as an “out-of-date parallel”.

reception

The daily newspaper Kurier judged the film: a gripping story of eroticism, love, drama and jealousy . DerStandard.at , on the other hand, criticized the lack of passion and wrote: The pictures have a tendency to be dignified and despite the "naked" the film is not only free of dirt, but downright chaste and completely incorporeal.

The Wiener Zeitung praised the film as a coherent, famously performed artist portrait , which paints a very authentic picture of Vienna at the end of the First World War , as does the ensemble, above all Riegner, Saavedra and Pachner. The daily newspaper Die Presse described the film as solid but pale, [...] which leaves strangely indefinite what moved this man.

The weekly newspaper Die Furche writes: "The director does not try his hand at the frenzy of pictures, but rather brings out his view of Schiele through the careful selection of the actors." Article from October 6, 2016.
