Carl Reininghaus
Carl Reininghaus (born February 11, 1857 in Graz , † October 29, 1929 in Vienna ) was an Austrian industrialist ( co-owner of the Reininghaus brewery ) and art collector .
Reininghaus was one of the most important collectors of Austrian modern art. He sponsored Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt , among others . He saved its famous Beethoven frieze from destruction by buying it. Reininghaus was an advocate of the avant-garde and organized, among other things, competitive exhibitions in which young artists of his time could exhibit their work. He sponsored numerous young and still unknown artists. His circle of friends included Alma Mahler-Werfel . Edvard Munch's painting Summer Night on the Beach came from Reininghaus' possession , which he sold to Walter Gropius in 1916 so that he could give it to Alma on the occasion of the birth of their daughter Manon . This work was the subject of restitution proceedings in 2007 and was ultimately restituted by the Austrian Gallery .
