Charles Erwin Starker (* 8. February 1872 in Stuttgart , † 18th April 1938 in Ditzingen ) was a Swabian painter of Impressionism .

Life

Starker was the son of Carl Starker and his wife Marie (née Knosp). After attending the Karls-Gymnasium in Stuttgart, from 1887 he studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy with Albert Kappis in the landscape class and Jakob Grünenwald in the drawing class, and from 1891 at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe with Gustav Schönleber . In 1892 Starker returned to Stuttgart, where he was supported by the impressionist Otto Reiniger . After completing his studies in 1895, he spent time in Antwerp , Paris and at the Munich Art Academy . In 1896 he settled in Stuttgart as a painter . In 1898 Erwin Starker's works were shown for the first time in a complete exhibition in Stuttgart.

In 1899 Starker married Emma Jehle from Nürtingen . From this marriage a daughter (* 1900) was born. In 1900 the young family moved to Ditzingen. Stronger, however, kept the studio in Stuttgart in the "studio building of the Association of Württemberg Art Friends " in Stafflenbergstrasse , where numerous cityscapes were created.

In 1915 Starker was drafted into the army . After returning from the field, he devoted himself to pastel painting in the 1920s . He lived and worked in Ditzingen until his death on April 18, 1938.

Works

Starker mainly painted local landscapes in pastel, less often in oil. He is considered an important portrayal of the Swabian homeland, especially the Swabian Alb. In 1927 he was represented at the anniversary exhibition of the Württemberg Art Association. Some of his works are presented today in the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart .
