The film award is not endowed with a monetary prize, but should be understood , in the words of the academy's managing director, Marlene Ropac , as an “honorary award from filmmakers for filmmakers” . Its purpose is to promote filmmakers, but not just to be an “industry festival”, but to advertise films from Austria and present an overview to the public. Until 2007, the “Austrian Film Prize” was an industry prize automatically awarded by the trade association for the film and music industry to distributors of the best-attended films of a year, which was renamed Golden and Austrian Ticket in 2008 .

Selection criteria

Films that come from Austrian production, i.e. were financed with Austrian funds or have an Austrian certificate of origin in international co-productions, are eligible for submission .
