action

In their tenth joint case, the investigation by Micha Oberländer from Lindau and Hannah Zeiler from Bregenz revolves around the legend of the Bregenz plague pfennig, a Viennese pfennig minted according to the ancient Roman model , here made of consecrated church gold . Around 1630, witches were to be appeased with gold coins minted by the church and the decline of the plague bought at the expense. When the church gave the witches coins alloyed with copper instead of pure gold, the lords of the church were cursed. According to legend, whoever touches the coins should be punished.

After the diver Florian Friedrichs found a find of 273 old coins from Lake Constance, he was found dead sitting on a bench on the shore of the lake. His mouth was sewn shut, forensic doctor Thomas Egger finds a coin in it that depicts St. Martin's Church, which can be attributed to the find. Since there is no recognized demarcation between the neighboring countries, a find in Lake Constance belongs to the finder.

Stefanie Eberle is the pregnant friend of the murdered man. Her mother Luisa Eberle invested her fortune in the treasure hunt and therefore demands her share of the find. Stefanie claims to have been with her mother at the time of the crime. Stefanie's ex-boyfriend Maximilian Bauer was jealous of the murdered man, and he hated him for anticipating him with the find. Bauer had invested ten years of scientific research in the search in vain. In addition, Florian had defrauded the interest group consisting of Luisa, Stefanie and Maximilian by submitting fake, inflated bills. Diver Manuel Mohr contributed five percent to the find.

In the Bregenz Church, the investigators talk to Pastor Hermann Schwab. There, the restorer Ingo Zotter found bricked-up rooms from the late Middle Ages during construction work. Zeiler receives a book about the plague pfennig from the archive from the pastor, but she realizes that there should be a second volume, but that this is missing. Nicole Novak works as a clairvoyant and alternative practitioner and author. She went broke after being sued by patients and sells garden herbs at pharmacy prices. The murder victim had phoned her several times, he wanted her assessment and clues about the treasure hunt.

It is unclear where in the lake Florian found the coins. Maximilian suspects that there could be other treasures at the site. Together with Luisa he goes on a search. The buoys of the floating nets of the boat are equipped with GPS, above which the route of the boat was recorded. Maximilian finds out that the find is said to have been in a place where there was no water at the time. He suspects that Florian staged the find in the lake only for Stefanie.

From the identification service, the investigators learn from the fingerprints that Florian Friedrichs broke into the restorer Ingo Zotter's some time ago. Zotter's wife Elisabeth was at home during the break-in. She has cancer and was found unconscious after the break-in. According to Zotter, nothing was stolen. Elisabeth was one of those seeking help from the alternative practitioner Novak. After Ingo was opposed to Novak's methods, Novak secretly continued to visit Elisabeth.

Forensic doctor Egger finds that the copper coins are remarkably well preserved after around 400 years in the water. The corrosion would have progressed much further, so the coins are not in the water. The investigators suspect that Friedrichs threw the coins into the lake and then recovered them there so that they officially belong to him, since claims cannot be made in the lake by any of the neighboring states.

Maximilian admits that he discovered the second volume on the penny from the Novak archive, where his fingerprints were found. Novak had stolen the book from the archive and passed her knowledge on to Friedrichs before he broke into Ingo Zotter's. Fourteen plague pennies were found near Novak, which corresponds to the share of the auxiliary diver Manuel Mohr. Mohr is also found murdered.

When searching for the original location of the coins, Oberländer suspects that the coins that were minted in the church never left the church. Zotter must have found it there, Friedrichs stole it when he broke into his apartment and then sank it in the lake so that the treasure officially belongs to him after it was recovered from legal no man's land. The investigators suspect Zotter of having murdered Friedrichs and Mohr because he had not only lost the treasure in the break-in, but also his wife, who has not come to consciousness since then. Zotter is finally arrested in the church.

Sidney Schering judged onquotemeter.de that the film was "a tenaciously told, unfocused crime thriller", "which is positively noticeable through a handful of concise pictures alone".
