Die Toten vom Bodensee is a German-Austrian crime film series that has been produced by Rowboat Film- und Fernsehproduktion and Graf Filmproduktion GmbH in cooperation with ZDF and ORF since 2014 . The shooting takes place in Bregenz , Lindau and the surrounding area.

In the border area of Lake Constance with the states of Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the German detective superintendent Oberländer and his Austrian colleague Zeiler are investigating. On Lake Constance and in the surrounding area, the two are confronted with, among other things, Celtic masks, a young bride who was murdered in her wedding dress, a sleepwalking child, a wax corpse from Lake Constance, women hung on the support of hops and cases of kidnapping. Despite or especially because of their different characters and ways of working, they also manage to solve challenging cases. As a rule, smooth cross-border cooperation is achieved.

Micha Oberländer
Micha Oberländer is a German chief detective who lives and works with his wife Kim and their daughter Luna near Lindau. He often puts his job before his family, which often leads to arguments between the spouses. Although he and his Austrian colleague Hannah Zeiler are completely different, they complement each other as a team. Oberlander's trademark is his old VW T2 (in episode 1 still a T3 ), which he also uses on duty and in which he sometimes sleeps when he has trouble with his wife. In the episode Der Wiederkehrer , he gets the company car from his Bregenz colleague Thomas Komlatschek.
Hannah Zeiler
The Austrian criminal inspector Hannah Zeiler forms a cross-border investigative duo with Oberländer. When she was twelve years old, her parents' yacht capsized in a storm in Lake Constance. Hannah was rescued, her mother was found dead and there was no trace of her father for decades. This trauma shaped her. Zeiler is serious and aloof, as well as a loner, and suffers from recurring nightmares that have haunted her since the experience about her parents. Even when on duty, she only drives a motorcycle - unless she is a co-driver at Oberländer. In the sixth case, Der Wiederkehrer , the riddle of the accident in her childhood is solved.

Production takes place on both the German and Austrian sides of Lake Constance. Filming locations include Lindau and Bregenz. Recurring locations are, for example, the Presidium of the “German-Austrian Fight against Crime”. The former offices of a construction company in Lauterach serve as the backdrop .
