Traces of Evil is the title of a thriller series in which Heino Ferch plays the leading role of the psychiatrist and interrogation specialist (criminal psychologist) Richard Brock. The co-production by ORF and ZDF , directed by Andreas Prochaska, was originally designed as a single crime film . Due to the success with the public and critics, it was decided to expand it to include a crime film series. Martin Ambrosch wrote the scripts .

Richard Brock

Richard Brock is a psychologist and university professor who is no longer allowed to work medically after his wife's suicide due to a malpractice . Besides his work as a lecturer Brock is from the Vienna police repeatedly as an interrogation specialist for investigation into particularly diffizilen cases in Vienna consulted and environment. He is characterized by the fact that he can very well understand why people act one way or another, which is also reflected in his interrogations of witnesses and perpetrators.

In private, Brock, who lives alone, tends to be closed and dismissive. This also regularly results in conflicts with others, especially since Brock prefers to work alone. He is only in constant contact with his daughter Petra, a police officer. Brock is often personally involved in the cases to be processed beyond his work as a psychologist. Until it closed, his regular pub was the “ Kaffee Urania ” in Vienna's 3rd district, Landstrasse , which was run as a night coffee house and actually existed until February 2016, “Brock's actual home” (FAZ).

The films are characterized by a gloomy mood, which is borne by Heino Ferch's reserved, closed and repellent game. The music and dramaturgy of the films are minimalist and focus on depicting the depths of the human soul in the modern world.

Over time, Brock realizes that he and his daughter, who works for the police, are caught in an internal police corruption affair. It almost costs him his life when a police officer deliberately shoots him in the back. Since the chief inspector Mesek is obviously not behaving in conformity with the police and killing a man who wanted to expose this corruption, Mesek also seems to be involved in the scandal. A cold distrust of one another develops between him and Brock.

background

The co-production of Aichholzer Filmproduktion GmbH, the ORF and ZDF are by Austrian Television Fund of the television and film promotion Vienna Film Fund promoted. For the traces of evil film Zauberberg , which is also set on Semmering in Lower Austria , the production received additional funding from the state of Lower Austria and the Cinestyria Film Commission and Fund.

On February 24, 2016, the shooting of the film Traces of Evil - Desire began in Vienna .

Heino Ferch on his Austrian series role at the end of the shooting of the third traces of evil film Zauberberg:

“I studied in Austria, was at the Mozarteum in Salzburg 25 years ago, and I already put my culture shock from northern Germany to the secluded Salzkammergut behind me. Since then I've been very Austrophile - and I really enjoy being here. "

The working title of the series was Traces of Evil: Sandag . Traces of Evil - The Interrogation is also mentioned subsequently as a series film title .

reception

“And then just Heino Ferch, again with a three-day beard and the eternally half-length, eternally grayish transition coat: his Richard Brock is already the current classic in psychology, laconic and concise in the questions he asks, brilliant in the brief analyzes and comments with which he lures colleagues and clients from emotional and mental blocks - with immense, always hypothermic, i.e. authentic empathy. Although a “Piefke”, Richard Brock is Sigmund Freud's most recent governor in Vienna, the world capital of all psychoanalysis.

The fact that he can be this is not least due to Martin Ambrosch, whose script sentences combine technically sound psychologist vocabulary with colloquial normality, including Viennese humor. His inventions are also Brock's ingenious housekeeper Anni (Gerda Drabek), who could have come from Nestroy's Volkstheater universe, and the unshakable host of “Kaffee Urania” (Gerhard Liebmann), Brock's actual home in the third district of Vienna.
