Judit Varga (born January 12, 1979 in Győr ) is a Hungarian composer and pianist . She composes classically contemporary music , film and theater music . As a pianist and chamber musician, she performed in many countries. She is increasingly looking for new impulses both in her compositions and in her educational work. She lives and works in Vienna and Budapest.

Life

Her music education began at the Franz Liszt Music School in Győr , where she learned the piano and flute . Then she attended the Béla Bartók Music High School in Budapest . At the age of sixteen she received scholarships to various international summer academies. In 1997 she studied composition and concert piano at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where she graduated with honors in 2005. At the same time she studied instrumental composition, media and applied composition and piano concert at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . Since 2013 she has been writing her dissertation at the university as part of the Ph.D. Studies. She has also been a lecturer at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Budapest since 2013 and teaches composition, applied and film music and historical composition techniques. 2013–2019 she was a lecturer for ear training and hearing analysis for composers and conductors at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since 2019 she has held the professorship for applied and media composition there.

Varga received first prizes at international competitions as a pianist and composer and performed as a solo pianist and chamber musician in several European countries. In 2001 she was composer-in-residence at the composers forum “Harmony” in Mittersill, received the Zoltán Kodály working grant three times (2002, 2003, 2006) and twice the Tokyo Foundation grant (2001, 2004). In 2017 Judit Varga was awarded the Béla Bartók Ditta Pásztory Prize, one of the highest relevant prizes in Hungary, for her artistic and educational work. In 2018 Judit Varga received the Ferenc Erkel Prize. In 2019 Judit Varga was awarded the renowned TONALi composition prize for her composition "Pendulum". The world premiere of the award-winning piece will take place in June 2019 in the Elbphilharmonie .

Her works are played by renowned festivals and houses around the world, such as Wien Modern , Hungarian State Opera , Cité de la musique Paris, Juilliard School New York, CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival, Mini-Festival, Konzerthaus Wien , Musikverein Wien , Muffathalle Munich or Warsaw Autumn . Varga works with orchestras and ensembles from all over the world, including Ensemble Modern , BBC Symphony Orchestra , Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra , Hungarian State Opera Choir, UMZE Ensemble, Concerto Budapest, Ensemble Kontrapunkte, Riot Ensemble London, ensemble XX. century (eXXj) and the Hungarian Radio Choir. Your compositions are commissioned.

In addition to classical piano works, her piano repertoire also includes pieces by contemporary composers.

As a composer, she has a particular interest in film scoring and theater music as well as incidental music with theatrical elements, as well as compositions for multimedia events. In 2013 she wrote the musical profile of the gala evening and the Prima Primissima award ceremony. As part of the evening gala, her orchestral piece Gradus ad Parnassum including a dance interlude was performed. Varga was nominated by the Austrian Film Academy in 2013 and 2014 for the “Best Music” award. In 2014 she received the Austrian Film Award for the soundtrack for the film "Your beauty is worth nothing" . In 2016 her new setting became the Soviet classic “The Strange Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks” (director: L. Kuleschow ), a composition commission from the Wiener Konzerthaus, as part of the “Film + Music live” subscription in the great hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus premiered. In 2016 her opera “Szerelem” ( “Love” ), a commission from the Hungarian State Opera and winner of the opera competition “60 Years of the Hungarian Revolution ”, was performed at the Hungarian State Opera.

Varga is a member of the Hungarian Composers 'Union and the Austrian Composers' Union , as well as their specialist group for film music. Furthermore, she is a member of Studio 5, an artist initiative from Hungary, which organizes progressive concerts and has set itself the goal of communicating new music to a wider audience.
